It is working now! :-) I did not compile a new kernel. I think it was a weird hardware problem.
All I did was that I just removed all internal and external motherboard USB connections and had some unrelated hardware changes (put a new IDE HD). Who knows what did the trick, but this motherboard (ASUS P4S800) definitely behaves itself quite strangely. On the other computer I own with the same MB, I can't attach anything to either one of the two internal USB connectors, or the BIOS would not see any of the secondary IDE devices. I can't even attach a case USB connector! I had it replaced twice - still the same problem.
Sorry, if I wasted your time although I don't feel this time was wasted at all.
Thanks again, and I hope I will be able to help you sometime later (somewhere on the forum),
great news. Congratulations! You may try to flash the BIOS,
maybe this will somehow help you with the other Motherboard.
My experience from the past is: After having a *lot* of
trouble with Intel CPUs and non-Intel Chip-sets I have
decided only to use Intel Chip-sets when using Intel CPUs. It's
for sure not a 100% guarantee however so far no trouble
with the above principle :-))
