upgreading to suse 10 from suse 9.3
 

Is this posible to upgrade to suse 10 from suse 9.3 with out downloading the installation CD?

Check out opensuse.org for SLICK, its a single CD version which you can download and burn the ISO. If the problem is a lack of a CD burner, there are a number of sites that sell various Linux distributions on a set of CDs or a DVD.

Yes, you can add yast repos of suse10 and do a full update.

I found that it was better to copy the home folder, wipe the h/d, install 10.0 and then copy back the home folder back.

This is definetly a better way to do things.

Original question was that can it be done? Answer is YES.
But is it really safe to do it? And the answer would be NO

In the past updates hadn't always worked well for me but I did use the update within the install from DVD process and it worked great this time, 9.3 to 10.0. I did however back up my data -- just in case.

Thats weird, works fine in my Firefox both in win and in suse, but i'll help you anyway.

Guide (mainly copy and paste, without pictures)

1)
The first thing we need to do is tell YAST where to look for the upgrades.
To do this, open up YAST. From the options on the left, SOFTWARE should already be selected.
On the right, click CHANGE SOURCE OF INSTALLATION:

The "Software Source Media" window comes up: This is where we tell YAST where to look for software packages to install them.
Click on the ADD drop-down box, and select FTP or HTTP.
Type "http://sunsite.informatik.rwth-aachen.de" into the SERVER NAME box.
Then put "/ftp/pub/linux/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/" into the DIRECTORY ON SERVER box, click OK

Performing the update

1)
If you are not already in YAST, open it now.
Click on INSTALL AND REMOVE SOFTWARE on the right.
Eventually, it comes up to the software installation screen.

2)
At the top left, click on the FILTER drop-down box, and select PACKAGE GROUPS.
Then, in the box immediately below this, scroll to the bottom, and click on 'zzz All'

3)
Over on the right, in the package list, right-click on any package name.
Select ALL IN THIS LIST, and then UPDATE IF NEWER VERSION AVAILABLE.

4)
Click accept, and WAIT , may take long time if not using DSL

At this point, don't bother with 10.0. If you haven't been missing out until now, we are about a month away from 10.1 which having been using the beta myself, I can say safely appears to be a FAR better upgrade than 10.0. It will also be better to download, more sensical media, and KDE 3.5, Firefox 1.5, Kernel 2.6.16(probably), and other truly up to date packages. SuSE 10 is too far behind now to make it worth your while unless you really can't live with 9.3 anymore.

Yes i would also wait for the new Suse 10.1.

But i have to admit that there really isn't too many REAL changes from 10 to 10.1.

Suse 10.1. has a bit newer kernel and finally a decent network manager for fast-switching (wlan) networks witout pain.
Also I've noticed that Smart will replace APT in the update department.
Kde has been updated, but it just gives you more eyecandy.
Every major package has been updated to newest one, but the benefits are quite small.

This or that, You choose.

It is just a matter of how current you want to be. Personally I find the differences between 10->10.1 less substantial in the overall scheme of massive changes, however the number of updates and changes given from the versions of say KDE 3.4 to KDE 3.5 and the new 2.6.15/2.6.16 kernel over 2.6.13 to be far greater and more useful for what I do then the changes of packages from 9.3 ->10. Though the 9.3 -> 10.0 did have a lot more changes in terms of hardware support, and ease of use, and even speed for me. But 10.1 will have all the same benefits and considerably more(IMO). So really it is a matter of whether the upgrade is a matter of need, or a matter of wanting newer stuff. With need, upgrading to 10.0 may make good sense, but for merely wanting newer packages and updates, 10.1 has all the better benefits.

Yea, all of you are right.
But my question is, why suse is not making a easy system, to upgrade on version to another with out downloading the hole CD. I am using low bandwedth connection. It's too hard for me to download 5 CDs. :((
