Upgrading from Suse 9.1 to 9.2

Hey guys!

I'm a Linux :newbie: . I've gotten really into Linux and my favorite distro is Suse 9.1 so far. I recently got Suse 9.2 and would like to upgrade what I currently have. I have never upgraded a Linux distro before so this is trekking into new territory for me. I wanted to find out if there's a way for me to upgrade without having to reformat my hard drive. I already started organizing my computer the way I like it and have files that I really don't want to have to reload if I have to reformat. Any help would be great, thanks!

It's simple to update your system (without reformatting, losing setups/data). Just boot from CD1 or the DVD and you'll be given the choice of new installation or update an existing system. Choose the latter. Voila

Upgrade from Source Media

I'd like to know whether it is possible to do the upgrade from 9.1 to 9.2 using YaST?

Does YaST Upgrade you from 9.1 to 9.2?

It hasn't been tried yet. You might want to wait until 9.2 is actually available from an ftp source.

I find upgrading always gets me in trouble somewhere down the line no matter what OS it is.
My suggestion back up your files to a cdr and start from scratch. I think you'll be much happier in the end

Just an update, I went ahead and updated from Suse 9.1 Pro to 9.2 Pro and everything went pretty seamlessly. I didn't have any problems.

Did you use the CD, or did you do so from an ftp source?

How did you go about updating from 9.1 to 9.2? Did you use the CD, or did you do so from an ftp source? If by an ftp source, please share the link.

I have the 9.1 distro, does that mean that if I want to upgrade to 9.2 I have to pay another $90.? Does YaST automatically update the 9.1 version to 9.2?

I bought Suse 9.2 Pro and upgraded from there. The reason why I did that was because I didn't have GCC and it would've been a pain in the @$$ to manually install GCC. So from 9.1 I upgrade to 9.2 Pro using the disc that I bought. If you already have 9.1 Pro, you can go ahead and download the 9.2 iso. You can install the stuff on 9.2 iso and be pretty good to go. 9.2 will update all the old packages of 9.1 and add all the new things you want. The free version of 9.2 is the Personal edition which has a little less than Pro but if you have 9.1 Pro, you should have the same packages as 9.2 Pro would but it'll just be a older version. I hope that helps you.

I have done the upgrade(from CD's) and it worked really well. I do notice that the boot process seems to be much slower. There are some really nice new features.

I got the cd images from p2p. Don't flame me, if I could afford it I'd have bought them gladly.

I need to get a job

Hello All....

Just wondering...maelstrom209 mentions a Suse 9.2 Personal out there available for free download...I haven't been able to find anything like this, most notably on the Suse webpage. Is there such a thing? If so, where did you see it available for download??

Thanks!

It does not exist. Novell does not plan to release a free version with 9.2.
