Updating opensuse 10.2

Is Yast an acronym for yet another sh*tty tool?

I've got a clean install of openSUSE 10.2. I haven't installed anything yet. All I want is my stupid development tools.

Why are there half a dozen options for software installation in the Yast control center?

And why do all of these tools take minutes to start up?

Why is there not a couple repositories configured out of the box? (Currently I have the DVD source configured, and after poking around an hour so managed to get a YUM mirror configured, gatech.edu)

And what's the point of a package management system if it can't manage the stupid packages!?

Yast Control Center -> Software Management, change filter to Package Groups, navigate to Development / Tools, right-click in the list and choose All in this list -> Install. Go to File Menu, then Quit -- Save Changes. Now I am presented with a series of conflicts, so I choose not to install the packages for which dependencies fail (I figure they're not gonna work without their dependencies anyway). Then after clicking "delete" or "do not install" three thousand times I give up.

So far, suse appears to be pretty, but crap otherwise. Never had any kinds of issues with Fedora, CentOS or Ubuntu.

Are you expecting a reply to this diatribe?

  • Like Fedora has 'yum' :
  • Suse has 'zypper' for package management.
  • See 'man zypper'

No, not really, just a frustrated rant. I've already moved on to another OS.

I actually think openSUSE is a great distro, even though I use Fedora mostly. You must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed this morning :-)

Actually, that's just what happens when I run out of coffee. ;)

Seriously though, you should try it again with the latest openSUSE distro. Install it in "VirtualBox" and see what happens. That way you won't mess up your current machine. BTW what is your hardware anyway?

I am in VirtualBox. I was using 10.2 specifically because I wanted to test Zimbra, and they've only got binary packages for RHEL (don't wanna pay for it), Fedora 7 (couldn't find it for some reason, just 1-6 and 8-11, 7 is conspicuously missing), Debian 4 (which seems to be working okay with Zimbra) and openSUSE 10.2.

Host is happily running Fedora 10 (and Vista), on dual core 3Ghz, 2GB ram, SoundBlaster Audigy 2ZS, nVidia GeForce 9800GTX.

I think I will have another look at current release of suse, just for schnitz'n giggles.

You can pretty well substitute Centos for RedHat. You could also try compiling it yourself. They do provide the source code for Zimbra too.

From memory Fedora 7 and 8 are _not_ supported anymore anyway, so don't bother. Maybe you can ask the nice people at Zimbra to compile it on the latest openSUSE distro?
