Updating KDE on SuSE Personal 9.1
 

Hi all,

OK, first of all, I'm new to Linux - SuSE Personal 9.1 is my first installed distro.

There's a bit of a rambling lead-in story to this post, which you can skip if you like - just jump down to the question at the very end ;)

As you probably know by now, KDE 3.3.2 was released last week - so I decided I'd try to upgrade KDE on my installation. My first attempt was to use YaST's "Install and Remove Software" feature (having first added some extra installation sources, including a supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1/yast-source/ on a nearby mirror server). I did a search for all packages that had KDE in the title, and any that had a new version on server (highlighted in blue) I set to refresh. So it did it's downloading, and installing, and I think everything worked fine. I did a reboot, and I logged back in, the KDE startup screen had been updated with some new graphics, my desktop icons were different, Kopete had some new features, etc.; and I would have been happy, only for some reason none of the screen savers worked any more - they all just showed a black screen.

Figuring I'd missed some important library, and fearing system instability, I decided to reinstall SuSE and try a different upgrade method (the first attempt had been done on a fresh install, so I didn't mind reformatting and installing again).

This second time, I decided to use YaST's "System Update". I turned off the CD as an installation source, and clicked System Update. It sat for a while checking for updates, and then came back with a list of things it was going to do to the system; this included updates to a whole bunch of packages, including many with KDE in the title. So I let it do it's thing, came back an hour later and it was done. Rebooted the machine, logged in (updated KDE startup screen) and oops! - all of the SuSE specific icons on my desktop (like User Guide, etc) had switched to generic "page" icons; YaST's icon was missing, the "busy" mouse pointers were missing, the screen savers were broken (again), and generally it felt like it had only upgraded half the system.

So now I'm wondering, what's the best, most reliable way to upgrade SuSE Personal 9.1 to use KDE 3.3.2?

I had Suse 9.1 before I became convinced Slacker. :p
Please, do not get me wrong, I loved suse 9.1. Solid German BMW, but that is its weakness.
Most of updates go through YAST2. You cannot do much tinkering yourself.
And again it did the same thing to me as to you. After "Update" I spent about 5 hours of blacksmithing
