Updating Apache to version 2.2.8 in openSuSE 10.2

Hi there --

I need to update Apache from the current version 2.2.3 to the latest available openSuSE version which is 2.2.8 on a system running version 10.2 of the distro.

My plan is to go to the openSuSE website and run the install from there. Two questions came to mind:

1. Can I successfully install version 2.2.8 of Apache on a 10.3 system, even if it is part of the 11.0 distro?

2. Assuming the answer to question one is yes, are there any gotchas that I should be aware of prior to doing the installation?

Thanks.

looking at the OpenSUSE build service http://software.opensuse.org/search the latest version there for 10.2 is 2.2.2., so that doesn't look to help you much.

Yes. It just may not work, and it clearly won't have been tested in any way. If it uses the same libraries (exactly the same versions) then you ought to have a chance, but there are obviously no guarantees.

This isn't a production server is it?

See previous comment.

Hi there --

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately it is a production server, so I need to tread lightly here.

If I have to I could do an upgrade of the entire operating system. Prior to that, I would run a mondoarchive of the disk image so if there were problems, I could revert back to the original OS version.

If you have chance to do a test install on spare hardware, or build a new version on your test hardware and then retire the older hardware to the test role, they may be ways of reducing the risk.
