updated SUSE 10.0, lost modem

couple days ago updated my SUSE 10.0 thru the novell auto updater. have used linux exclusively for over 7 years but this one has me stumped. after update no "user" can access the modem. get told "don't have permission" check that /usr/sbin/pppd is set correctly (have checked and did a chmod and no changes) however if I log in fresh as root I can use the modem and logon to web normally, but if I have loged in as a user and tried to use the modem and then log off and back in as root and try to access the modem it tells me that the modem is "busy" and the only way I can get the modem to be "un busy" is to reboot the computer.???

what could be locking up my modem (a 56k dialup US robotics hardware modem) currently I'm here using kppp and mozila and as root. everthing works normally I like SUSE but this is bugging me. any ideas

thanks
Bob

Try to run
Code:

SuSEconfig
as root.
