Update 8.1 --> 9.1 using YAST2

I am running Suse 8.1 with no problems but it's time to update. I have downloaded 9.1 and I am ready to go. Some questions:

Is it a good idea to do this update with YAST 2? I have started this process but I baulked when it talks about "updating" the base file structure. Does anyone have experience doing this update? Did it cause any problems?

Should I provide more detail - if so what sort of thing?

Thanks for any advice.

"Is it a good idea to do this update with YAST 2?"

It is never a good idea to update any operating system on top of itself. If the update doesn't result in a working operating system you are screwed. I always install the new operating system to a spare partition and dual boot the old and new systems until the new system is stable.

Once you have the new operating system installed you can copy your data and settings from the old to the new system.

I take your point jailbait and it's a good idea. I will follow your advice, but will need some help/more advice.

I've installed Suse a few times from CD or DVD with no problem. In a nutshell, how would I go about installing Suse 9.1 from the download which is now sitting in directories within my Suse 8.1 partition? I think I can handle creating the extra partitions, but not sure how to proceed from there (I don't have a DVD burner).

(This PC is already running Win98/Suse dual boot).

Better yet, could someone point me to documentation on this?

Thanks again jailbait.
