unable to adjust screen brightness on my laptop after installing 10.3
 

Hi, i am not able to adjust the screen brightness on my laptop after using 10.3.

I like to seek some advice on what should i do? Where can i read to solve this problem or what respository or updates do i need to install to enable this adjusting screen brightness feature?

Maybe a solution would be to install Graphics Card drivers

Hi i'm still new to linux, so i have some qns. Install the graphics card driver, yes i have but its for windows. How do i install?
Or do i down load the driver from the internet which is for my graphics card?
Do i use wine to install?

If u have Suse installed go at Yast->software->comnunity repositories and then add the ATI or Nvidia repositories(depending on what card u have).
Then again go to Yast->software->install software(or software managment-cant remember) and at the search bar type nvidia or ATI.Click on the appropriate drivers to install them.

As far as the nvidia is concerned the Nvidia Installer HOWTO for SUSE LINUX users taken from www.nvidia.com http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-...ler-HOWTO.html

says: to install the NVIDIA driver. Select the following packages:

Is is a BIOS function or is it a video card driver function?

If it's a BIOS function open Yast -> Hardware -> Keyboard Layout. From there select your laptop model for the keyboard layout. In some cases the exact keyboard may not be there. For example, my Acer 3003 isn't there but the Acer Travelmate 800 activates the "Fn" keys for me allowing me to adjust the brightness, turn touch pad on/off, etc.

Otherwise as suggested, check what video card is installed in your machine and install the appropriate driver.

Hi thanks for replying my question. I desperately need some guidance.
On windows, the display card is display as ATI Radeon Xpress 1150.

On linux after typing lspci is displays:

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS485 [Radeon Xpress 1100 IGP]

I can confirm its not the bios problem becos when i go to kdw control center -> peripherals -> display and select the power control tab, the brightness feature is not enable. It says your hardware currently does not support the changing of your display

I am facing the same problem.

And to clear up the things, the brightness of the display has nothing to do with the Graphics Card. It's a totally monitors' thing.

In regular TFT monitors used in desktops, the buttons for adjusting the brightness, contrast and numerous other things are there in the monitor itself. But in notebooks, like mine here, HP Pavillion dv2000 notebook, the keys for adjusting the brightness of the display (the tft) are some function keys (f7 and f8 in mine) combined with the special key (fn key) in the keyboard.

In windows Vista, which comes default with this laptop, it works fine. But here in Open Suse 10.3, it doesn't work. So please, if anybody knows how to fix this problem, please enlighten us all.
