unable to activate swap

hello everybody...
i m trying to install suse 10.2 on my laptop
(acer aspire 3000).

i have created 500mb of swap drive (/dev/hda8 )
and 9gb of os drive(/dev/hda9) where i will install suse.

prob is when i try to install suse 10.2 it gives msg 'not enough mem.
available to install yast. activate swap '
when i give path to swap ie /dev/hda8 it does not accept it..
and gives error msg.."unable to activate swap"

any help???

regards...

I may be mistaken, but I suspect the 'not enough mem' error is caused by the small size of the Suse partition (9 gig). Depending on how much software you have installed, there may not be enough room left for the temporary files the system must create in /tmp to load the graphical elements of the system.

Try booting to runlevel 3. At the grub screen, you may see a boot: line below the menu of OSs. Enter 'init 3' and press enter. You should be able to boot into multi-user command line mode. Su to root, and issue the command 'swapon' to activate swap.

Then the command 'init 5' to go to graphical mode. If it works, you can use SuSe utilities to check the amount of swap usage, and thereby verify that the SuSe partition is too small for normal boot to graphical mode.

hi bigrigdriver...
i havent installed suse yet and none of its s/w....
i m facing this prob before any installatin begins..
installation cd gives following option...at the beginning...

INSTALLATION
INSTALLATION -APCI DESABLED
INSTALLATION -LOCAL APCM DISABLED
INSTALLATION -SAFE SETTING..
..
..

i usually select installation option. then it does some system testing and sw/driver loading and then gives error 'not enough mem. to install yast. create swap'

#as far as i know 5gb of installation drive is enough for root drive, then how come 9 gb is less for suse.

my laptop spec.
amd sempron 1.6ghz
256mb ram
40gb hd

regards.
