Tune-up required?

After battling and struggling and lots of swearing, I eventually got Suse 10.1 running Compiz / Xgl / etc, the themer works much better. I'm very relieved I got that under the knee. But, now something new. I've updated the entire system to the latest & greatest, running Compiz manager with cgwd. I notice that my laptop (HP nc8230) seems to slow down as time passes. I'm not running anything out of the ordinary, just evolution, couple of web pages. What I would like to know, please, (1) how can I find out what is slowing this down, & (2) is there an utility, preferably with GUI, that can check for broken links, files not being used, etc? With Windows I used Tune-Up Utils. Any suggestions for me?

Thank you sir, I shall do that. I have figured out that the Compiz etc. updates are causing the problems. I am in the process of elimation to see which exaclty. Last time I checked they were also looking for the culprits at Beryl's.
