Trying to use DAR/KDAR for backup...problems

After 3 unsucessfull attempts at using this program for backup I'm not sure where to turn...it keeps stalling/crashing when it reaches the /proc directory. I have excluded the following directories from the backup file:
/mnt
/home
/windows_xp

Do I need the /proc directory?...what is its purpose? I've left this program run for more than 15hrs and it stalls at /proc everytime.
Using KDE 3.4, kernal version=OpenSuSE 10.0. Thoughts? Thanks...

I understand why you would exclude /proc and /tmp...

but why the /dev and /sys directories?...dont they have important info on the hardware of your system?
