Trying Suse Linux 10, no GUI after install

I just installed Suse Linux 10 with no problems during install. Just as it attempted to go to the desktop, the screen blanked out and a colorful square box pops up saying, Sync out of range. I've made many attempts to fix this problem trying to reinstall, I tried using the command line using fx86config and entering the info for my hardware, nothing seems to work.
I have an ATI All-in-Wonder 9600 XT video card and a Samsung 19" 900DF Monitor. I received messages like: XIO: Fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ".0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
If anyone can help me with any information I'd be highly appreciative. This has really become a headache. I'm open to all suggestions, and thanks in advance.

Can't get GUI working in new Suse 10 install

Hi rshaw, thanks for responding to my question so quickly. I'm just about out of ideas I tried the command xf86config and going through the set-up, and choosing the lowest settings for my monitor and video card, didn't work. I tried the command sax2, and the config window won't come up I just keep getting that box that pops up saying, Sync out of range. What does the ctrl-alt-f2 do? Do I just hit that key combination at the command prompt, and then log in as root? I'll try anything at this point. I'm getting disgusted w/ Suse, I never had this problem w/ other distros before. Thanks again.

Hi eagledt63, your problem most likely is related with your monitor, it seems that SuSE couldn't recognize the model. If sax2 does't work, then you have always the option to do it manually. If you want to go this way, you need to edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf. For this purpose you need a text editor (vim, nano).

First, change to root and do a backup of your current xorg.conf:

Quote:
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
Then use the text editor to open the file. Go to this section:

Quote:
Section "Monitor"
Option "CalcAlgorithm" "XServerPool"
DisplaySize 350 260
HorizSync 30-96
Identifier "Monitor[0]"
ModelName "SAMSUNG SYNCMASTER"
Option "DPMS"
VendorName "SAM"
VertRefresh 43-160
UseModes "Modes[0]"
EndSection
There are three key specifications you need:

- DisplaySize (in mm, Horizontal Vertical)
- HorizSync (in KHz, Horizontal frequencies min-max)
- VertRefresh (in Hz, Vertical frequencies min-max)

You have to put the right numbers for your monitor, you have to google if you don't have the manual.

I have also an ATI graphic card, if you want the best of your card you need to install the propietary driver (fglrx), so you have 3d acceleration. You can do this later. For now make sure that you are using the ati driver, check this section in the xorg.conf file:

Quote:
Section "Device"
BoardName "Radeon X600 (RV370) 5B62 (PCIE)"
BusID "1:0:0"
Driver "ati"
After that save the file. Log in as normal user and hopefully you'll be in KDE. If you still have problems, please post the content of the xorg.conf file.

first of all 'Out of Range' on your monitor just means that Suse is projecting a resolution that your monitor cannot display. During your install - when you get to the screen that asks you if you want to install or run memtest and all that hit F3 (i believe) and it will give you a menu to lower your resolution. I usually install on 600x800 then I can change it later.

Alt+F2, Alt+F3, or Alt+F4 will give you another text based prompt to login and do what you gotta do. Alt+F7 will send an init 5 signal and try to give you your GUI. What happens when you type 'yast'? if you can get in there you should be able to reset (or even define) your video settings.

sig:
do you have a linux prompt? Or just nothing? What have you done?

well i installed SUSE 10 with no problem (GUI based) and during my last reinstall on the "Hardware configuration" part, SUSE detected my ATI Radeon X600 and my monitor (LG Flatron L1750S).

I set the res to 640x480 the last time in hopes it will run on a lower res but it didnt. When i actually boot up to linux i just get a command line login (everything else is cmd line). Thats all i have!

any other special settings changed from the default intall? If you're at a suse prompt, what does it do when you type 'yast', 'init 5', or 'startx'? if you type 'less /etc/inittab' and find the line that looks like this:
Code:
# The default runlevel is defined here
id:5:initdefault:
Depending on what that number is (5=GUI, 3=Text) - tells your system to boot that way. Can you check your inittab and tell me what errors you get with 'yast', or 'init5'?

monitor issues

i made this thread for people who having problems
during installation for monitor or other general monitor/video issues
+ some extra corks

keep in mind this is essentially for newbies, but it might even help some
advance users out

try this for tv card

no sound - problems

1. check wiring from tv card to sound card (however it's done / each tuner is different)
2. unmute line-in in sound program (alsa, kmix), if more than one check all
3. i have suse 10.0 enterprise, not even desktop edition but i don't think it matters, get
dvb rpms
4. get yast tv card configuraiton / or whatever distro tv card gui config app there is, if you
don't have it
5. configure tv card, go through wizard, make sure you scan for channels, and the frequencies get
loaded for each channel and save, otherwise you will not get audio in your tv app
4. install tvtime, kdetv, whatever other tv app...i use tvtime (it works great)

video problems
1. if you get an error that says can't access video0 whatever, go to directory
and change permissions to chmod 777 name of directory / file in the console

other things to check, sometimes as stupid as this sounds, check other folders / files
give them full permissions, not sure but it works sometimes

also install the source, that always helps

specially installing xine, firefox sources, etc

this is what worked for me, i was fustrated like for a long time not being able to figure out
how to get some things in linux, and i still don't know how exactly everything works, but
just keep messing with it.

like most linux problems, try messing with permissions, source, updating rpms/packages
sometimes i use suse 10.1 packages for suse 10.0...and it works

i'm sure that might be the case with other distros...becareful using xgl / aiglx or whatever it is
it does turn 3d acceleration off, and i'm sure there is a way to disable it if you don't want to use it, but if you have automatic updates, and update xorg when xgl is isntalled, good luck
my system crashed...it's a pain bringing back up

while i'm at it, people with monitor / video card issues
when i installed linux...no matter what distro, if i ever tried using the test monitor in the initial hardware configuration setting during install my pc crashed.

i don't bother, i leave it as it says and hit next and continue.
then i boot into failsafe and
download install video drivers from nvidia / ati's repositories and not the dummy drivers
(with suse, you can add repository through text mode by typing in yast in the cmd and then go to
software source *add http or ftp repos then go to software management, search for packages, install)

then i configure x86, i know for suse you have to use sax2, but sax2 fails also. so for suse users try x86config --text

configure your monitor size, resolution (for some odd reason, keep on trying until u find one that works), add horizontal freq, vertical freq if asked, save and quit

(i think that's it, or something similar. i'm typing this 4:20 in the morning) i'm sure there's something like that with other distros, heck it might work with other distros already. it seems like a common command for x86.

then getting into the gui from failsafe, once video drivers are in

if you have sli for nvidia, type in the console nvidia-xconfig --sli=on
(just look it up if i made a typo) | it will write another xorg file, but that's okay
just type init 5, or startx in cmd line to get back into the gui to test
if it don't work keep messing with settings.

next, i disabled services that gave me service errors during boot up
it would say acpid, irq_balancer, smbfs, nfs, and so on
i simply disabled them. i'm sure there's a way to fix them if the kernel is reconfigured
but i'm gonna be honest, i'm not so familar with linux. so everybody that already knows this..good for you, it's more for newbies.

also try updating kernel / x86 packages that are giving you problems once you get it on a fresh install with nothing else configured, that might get rid of some of the services.

then reboot, and make sure you can get in through a normal boot, if not don't give up keep trying different things.

getting firefox 2 on suse 10 before suse 10.2
just get the source and unzip the tar into the directory where the firefox folder is in

tar -xvzf name of file (this will replace the exising files, or copy it in the same old directory)

and for some odd reason i just clicked on the firefox link already on the menu
and firefox 2 popped up, i'm sure there's a more correct way like uninstalling the old
putting the new one in, creating a symbolic link etc. honestly who cares,
half a year will go by and a new kernel version / etc will come out and people are going to
download that and reinstall

other great apps / some apps need front ends, so look for them with the combination of other
packages with the same name (ex. xine & xine-ui)

amarok
xmms
xine (get libdvdcss2 for more info on commercial dvds * i will say no more on it
whatever the license issue is, it's ridiculous)
to avoid this there are alternatives such as hooking up external dvds players to
tv cards or video-in ports, or use wine or some emulator for a paid windows dvd
software program that can be emulated on linux)
tvtime
nero
kaffeine
realplayer
w32codecs
java
openoffice
thunderbird
lame
mplayer
mplayer firefox browser plugin
adobe reader
pico - this tool is awesome, you have no idea how important this is and easy it is to use
greatest, simplest, text editing tool. great for failsafe mode
get it, don't ask!!!!
wine - it's free, and if you mess around with it, you can get window apps to work on linux
but,

crossover or whatever it's called does office, but you have to pay for it
transgaming does window games for linux, once again you have to pay for it

things that tick me off about linux
1. commercial-dvds, give me a break - solve the issue for *%$&%&^ sakes

2. easier installation (software selection is great, but there's so much crap
i'm not even sure what does what even with the description. Make it simpler /
i don't want all this extra stuff, and i don't want 5 (%*&$$## versions of
volume controls, or etc. give me the basic stuff, throw in a add on manager gui that lets you install all the extra 5,7,8 versions of whatever after. I'm not going to sit
for 5 hours and sort through all the different packages + the list of sub packages, and read descriptions that are pretty much worthless sometime on some of the packages.

On top of that
the monitor issue, ridiculous. people shouldn't have to go through so much
^(*&^(*%F to get into the gui. don't try to counter argue or justify it.
simply look at the installation of windows and mac and compare it to linux

3. easier installion/configuration and of applications to the start menu in kde & gnome
-that includes add/removing things in the start menu such as
program links, new programs, old programs, etc

4. get rid of the start menu, make it dockable and completey hide it if you don't
want it (also make it more of a nav bar that's dockable / customizable with apps you can
choose) *how many times has the start menu crash on you in windows, and for some odd
reasons i've had it crash on me in linux a few times)

5. uninstall / install drivers *make a gui interface like windows / i'm sorry it just makes
sense. the average home user does not know how to reconfigure the damn source or even
install rpm packages for drivers on linux. *rpms are easy -great, if you remember to
change the rights to certain folders / files (sometimes this can get complicated if you
know what i mean)

6. SOUND CARD DRIVERS FROM CREATIVE!!! IF NVIDIA AND ATI MAKES SOME EFFORT TO MAKE DRIVERS
FOR LINUX, THEN MAYBE....JUST MAYBE CREATIVE SHOULD....ESPECIALLY SINCE CREATIVE IS
PROBABLY THE DOMINANT SOUND CARD IN THE MARKET (ON BOARD SOUND DON'T COUNT)

until linux decides to fix 1,2,3,5, and i'm sure there's whole bunch of other stuff
windows/mac os will always be dominant...it's just easier to configure / use

but i do love linux cuz it's free, and it might take a little bit more to get things to work but it's so worth it, that and sometimes things work better

heck my tv software in linux works better than windows
sorry i had to get rant off for a little bit, but things needed to be said

i hope this helps anyone having problems

Hello All, I hope this is the right section. It is the closest I could find to my problem. I am running a HP Pavilion Laptop zv6000 using opensuse 10.0. I also have a windows partition on the same machine which is useful or I would not be able to write this email.

I have been running KDE. As a background I have been traveling for the last few weeks, but I have not installed or accepted any executable files other than a Open office worksheet from one of my colleages (mentioned but I do not believe this is the problem). My friend's daughter playing "magic bubbles" or myself doing some trivial work were the last ones on the train using Linux. I tried to access the linux distribution yesterday and kde would not initiate. My error message on Root was that I may need to reinit SCPM. When i ran "scpm enable" it tells me that it could not determine the resource names of the resource type files and when I run "scpm list" it cannot open database.

If I attempt to start kde I recieve the error message: No write access to $HOME directory. $DISPLAY is not set.

I am a newbie and have not experienced this problem before. Everything has been running quite well for about a year. I can actually log on to my linux partition, see my files, etc, but pretty well had everything set up to run out of kde.

I don't have the boot disk with me, it is back in Texas and I am presently in the Czech Republic, heading to St. Petersburg tomorrow and then back in Czech Republic on Tuesday.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Best regards,
MunichTexan

Graphics sub-system may still be running

If you're at runlevel 5 when you hit control+alt+f2 then you still have your graphics subsystem running. My first attempt to run sax2 reported an error reading device. When I rebooted with the argument "init 3" then the graphics subsystem never gets started and sax2 can run successfully. I believe I could also have done "init 3" from the root prompt after the control+alt+f2 sequence.
