trouble with yast in 10.2_64

I'm having trouble installing rpm's with yast...I keep getting "following packages haven't been found on the medium "error,or the yast window crashes and when you try to access it again you get another error"another application is accessing medium"......The rpm's I am trying to load are not available in any repository so I can't go down that path.
This is my 3rd intall this week, everytime there has been a different problem.but I need to install rpm's in yast as kpackager throws up a shed load of dependencies errors. As the sytem is running stable now(sort of}the Xserver is still giving me gypp....but not so bad as it was...I don't want to reinstall ...AGAIN!!!!!
Can someone help before I run screaming back to XP.......

If you want to install a single rpm just do it at the command line: as root:
Code:
rpm -Uvih <rpmname.rpm>

since suse 10.0 up to opensuse 10.2 I never did use yast since it was corrupt in 10.0 and not working better in the latest distros. The best thing to do is to include gurus rpm repository into yast after the initial install and to install smart with yast. Then never touch this bad package tool*g. Just use smart... It is at least more comfortable than yast... if you take the latest version all necessary repositories are already configured in smart, very comfortable... and yes, if you are familiar with a terminal just try the tip of rjwilmsi... you can also use smart in the terminal for installing any rpm you like with

smart install packagename

also think about installing 10.2 instead of 10.0, much improvement in stability, but this is perhaps subjective, I do not want to reinitiate a flame among suse users*g

ok if you read closely, you can decipher a little bit from what the message says, step by step. First of all, I'm not sure what you mean by Yast "10.2_64" (i'm still a newbie as well!) But I'm assuming you have SuSE 10.2 64 bit. If that is not the case please let me know. I do recommend though, you use SuSE 10.2, YaST works great on SuSE 10.2! Or at least it works a whole lot better than on previous SuSE versions.

Now, from the message you just wrote it seems YaST isn't able to find "packages" on a "medium". What medium do you think YaST is talking about? The CD maybe? Highly unlikely! My suspicion is you didn't configure YaST correctly for the software repositories.

I had the same problem with an application I wanted to install. I was unable to install using rpm because of the rpm dependency hell and YaST was unable to find the rpm's. The easy fix was to add as a software repository a site that had the application I wanted to install.

If you post the name of the application you want to install maybe someone knows of a software repository for you to add to YaST. Meanwhile, I highly suggest you read the sticky thread about YaST repositories and add all the repositories there then try to install your software again using YaST.
