Trouble with Suse 11.4 desktop

I installed 11.4 and it's driving me nuts. I can't get the widgets to stick on the panel and I can't get ANY icons to stick on the desktop. I can click on an application in the app menu and put an icon on the panel by right clicking the app. But when I click to put it on the desktop, no go.
As for the widgets, when I drag them into the panel they scurry away or lock behind an icon I've put in the panel and I can't get them back out to change the location.
Any help will be much appreciated.

I managed to get some icons on the desk top by going into "Workspace Behavior" and changing the desk top. The widgets in the panel have still got me baffled.
