Trouble with Suse 10.2 and Nvidida 96xx drivers


Whenever I install the nvidia 96xx drivers for my Geforce 4 Ti 4200 AGP 8x, all the resolutions fail to validate according to xorg log. It then defaults to a 800x600 resolution. When I use the 8xxx drivers it works. Any reason why this happens?

Hi,

I just bought an HP dv2000z with nVidia.
Found that following the directions here (for 10.1) worked ok for me:

You may omit the steps for Xgl.

Yeah, I tried that. It doesn't work. I have also tried installing the rpm package from nvidia's yast repos. That doesn't work either. Perhaps my GPU is too old? What model is yours?

It worked fine for my g/c - gforce 6 or something. Why not try an older driver in case it is the age of your g/c that is causing the problem

I told you in my first post that the old 8xxx drivers worked for me. However, the nvidia site says that my gpu is unsupported in the 97xx drivers and on. The 96xx drivers is listed as compatible with my gpu. However, when I install it (using both yast and manual install using nvidia's installer) all resolutions fail to validate. I need to get the 96xx drivers in order to use AIGLX. Any help appreciated.

fwiw, installing the gnome-xgl-settings utility and 'shift-double-click' the button to enable xgl-- may work with some cards which are 'unsupported' in the /etc/X11/xgl-hardware-list.

My 4-year old Cowbook with ATI Radeon LY is unsupported but works fine--give it a shot.

Don't have any experience level with AIXgl.
Also, have you given 'Beryl' a try?

Yes, XGL and Beryl work fine with the 8xxx drivers that I have installed. However, the bad thing about XGL is that I can't run games in direct render mode because XGL is using that pipeline. I wanted to try AIGLX because its using indirect rendering, but I need the new 9xxx drivers. Do you know why the 9xxx drivers aren't working for me?

# Direct rendering does not work when running Xgl, but it does on Xorg. Why are OpenGL applications not accelerated?
Do not intermix hardware acceleration and direct rendering. OpenGL applications will be hardware accelerated on Xgl if the driver supports pBuffers or FBOs, like the nvidia and fglrx drivers do. Direct rendering on the other hand is impossible to implement at the moment, the necessary extensions for implementing that feature are not even specified yet, let alone being implemented.
Direct rendering implies hardware acceleration, but not the other way round. Direct rendering is a bit faster than indirect rendering, but indirect rendering is not as bad as it sounds.
# How can I check whether I have direct rendering on Xorg?
Direct rendering is active if running glxinfo|grep direct on top of Xorg (not Xgl!) shows you "Yes". On top of Xgl this will always show you "No". Unfortunately, for Xorg having direct rendering is a synonym for having accelerated graphics, and it is more difficult to detect whether hardware accleration is available than it is to detect direct rendering.
# How can I check whether my card supports pBuffers or FBOs?
When you are running Xgl check the formats listed in /var/log/Xgl.0.log, under "pbuffer formats:" and "fbo formats:", respectively. If there are any, your driver supports the according mode. You can also call glxinfo and check for GLX_SGIX_pbuffer in the "GLX extensions:" section (not client or server glx extensions), and for GL_EXT_framebuffer_object in the "OpenGL extensions:" section.

Save your 8xxx xorg.conf settings and install the 9xxx driver and then do a 'diff' on the current xorg.conf to your saved conf to see the device options and go from there...

Okay I've tried the 96xx drivers with my 8xxx xorg.conf. Still no luck. Here's the xorg.log. Please somebody help.

Regrefully,

This is the state of affairs one must accept when using older equipment, yours being a gpu which is not supported by nVidia on 96xx.

Not abandoning you--let's revisit your issue in more detail--what specifically are you trying to accomplish--e.g., what application(s) do you wish to run--that sort of thing--please provide as much detail as possible.

No, my GPU is supported by 96xx, it is not supported by 97xx. BUT, I have fixed my problem! Okay my Hivision LCD monitor does not give a proper EDID, thus the new Nvidia driver couldn't properly validate my resolution modes (I am guessing the old driver doesn't care about the EDID). All I had to do was add the line

to the Device section of xorg.conf and everything worked fine. I also have AIGLX running now! However, I was wondering if normal 3D apps could run using direct rendering with AIGLX. Is this the case? After all my 'glxinfo' says my GL driver is from NVIDIA, not Mesa (like in XGL).

Well most of the 3D apps I run are games. I've tried quake 3 and it seems to run at a decent framerate so I assume it is direct rendering.
