Tip for users installing with CD's -use Multiple devices

If you have 2 or 3 (or more) CD devices when installing from the 5 CD set you can "Preload" as many CD's as you have devices -- a system I'm installing on has 4 CD devices -- put all the CD's in and you won't have to keep waiting to re-load the next CD.

Most machines have 2 CD's at least these days so even this will save you quite a bit of time --you can go away and do something else while the system is installing.

Cheers

What do you do with 4 CD devices? I'm just curious. Two I can understand, like one CD-Rom, one CD-burner, but 4? I really wanted to know .

One's a DVD-RAM device which can read / write to DVD-RAM in CARTRIDGES as well as DVD-RAM non-cartridge disks (do a lot of Network Backups and DVD-RAM is still for a lot of people an excellent archival medium).

Devices 2, and 3 are shared throughout the network with some documentation DVD's on them and used quite a lot in our Network as a common Library -- a lot easier than having it all on Disk.

Device 4 is normally free and usually reserved for the server for software installs etc etc.

Actually it's not unusual for servers to have quite a lot of CD drives (or DVD's)

However most home computers I've seen these days have 2 --so it's not too unusual even to have two.

(and BTW don't forget CD/DVD devices can be SHARED anyway so if you do have a network it may be better to have the CD's etc on the server than having a lot on the client machines).

Cheers

Now that's a good idea. I think all my PC's have a DVD-reader. Only one has a DVD-burner. Most of my computers has no CD-rom device at all, but as you said, I share the ones that has it with the ones which doesn't. Actually, I've a bunch of movies in .avi format, burned into a CD. My Xbox can't play CDR's, so I use a shared DVD device on my network and play those movies from the Xbox. Pretty neat
