realplayer10gold

My own problem with realplayer 10 lead me here. My issue is that artsd takes over /dev/dsp like it owns it. The best way to deal with this problem (which causes realplayer to just sit there and not even try to start), is to disable the sound server from the KDE Control Panel. If you really need alerts or something, people suggest aplay. Not sure if that handles oggs, but there are other players you can use.

My advice for this type of problem is to just avoid arts all together. Most apps people use will use a different sound plugin. Use xine or gstreamer for amarok and alsa or oss for kaffeien/xine/mplayer/xmms.

Re: Realplayer 10

I did a clean install of Suse 9.2 and chose to install all of KDE. It also installed Realplayer 10 and works perfectly. I didn't have to download any rpm files for Realplayer 10, it's already included in Suse 9.2

I finally found out why realplayer does not work for me. as far as Amarok in active in my tray realplayer does not work, and when I quit Amarok real works but Amarok doesn't give out sound. this case is however ok for me. I dont need Amarok.

Success

Yes! I have been following this thread and trying what has been suggested. Here is the simple solution to a seeming complex problem. Thanks. Things are working for me now. I had two computers showing the same problem and both are working.
