The Kde Xserver Display Epidemic, Its a huge problem .....
 

Basically here is what hundreds of people are getting. I say hundreds because I have been reading on this problem for 3 days now, and I have read through dozens of websites.... So I have found 2 big problems....First people who probably know the answer are not paying attention to the main issue. And second people with the problem are not asking specific questions. So I am going to start a thread here and on another site which solves both of these. Believe me this is a BIG PROBLEM . I have installed SuSe on 2 desktops , and there were no problems. I have been using Freebsd on OS X for 4 years, and again I have never had an issue like this.

Here is the basic error message people are getting with a variety of Linux Flavors--

xset: unable to open display ""
xset: unable to open display ""
xsetroot: unable to open display ''
startkde: starting up ...
ksplash: cannot connect to X server
kdeinit: Aborting, $DISPLAY is not set.
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
kwmserver: cannot connect to x server
kERROR: Couldn't attach to DCOP server!
startkde: Shutting down ...
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
Error: Can't connect kdeinit!

Now troubleshooting:

Most of this is happening only on Laptop PCs so it seems to be an issue with the display configuration or drivers. How do I restart and re configure the X Sever? I am not sure what file to begin with or if there is a command I can run. The x server is not running.

If that doesn't work I will post a follow-up. I am setting up Linux to demonstrate it as a server and desktop at my High School in Dubai. I am trying to promote it and get students learning things outside of XP. I hope someone else can see the value in what I am doing, and how what I am doing could be shutdown if Installing Linux on these laptops (which everyone at school uses-- Toshiba Terca M4) is too difficult. I think editing a few config files is great for my students. But if experts -- on over 20 forums -- cannot solve this issue then what chance do newbies have?

You need to look at /etc/X11/xorg.conf if you are using XOrg or XF86Config-4 if you are using XFree86.

Look at the man page for help. It looks like the display section is not being set up properly.

One "cheat" is to run Knoppix and then look at the config file, then copy relevant bits.
