System hanging after a print, openSUSE 11.0 x86_64, on AMD X2

I thought I had this trouble fixed by de-selecting shared printing. I don't, though. The desktop freezes, the mouse-cursor vanishes, and I can't even use [ctrl] + [alt] + [F1] to get out of it; I have to reboot. The printer is a canon bj200, it's on the parallel port which runs through an Iomega ZIP 100.

After four updates of CUPS and everything I could find having to do with printing: Mostly the same story. I've tried all the parallel port modes in BIOS setup. The desktop freezes when I print a test page even while still in yast. The desktop freezes when I print from an application. There's no getting out of it without a system reset. Strange that after the reboot, the printout I tried to do before having to reset often then proceeds.
