Suse/Windows network

Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm very new to Linux.

I'm sure there must be a way to do this but I can't figure it out. I want my Windows computer to recognize my Suse 9.2 computer on the network, how do I do this?

Thanks

Mike

you can setup "file & printer sharing" on your windows computer and samba client on suse, or a more secure way: share from your suse computer using samba server (and client when needed).

start with your firewalls off, and setup the samba server using Yast (under servers if i remember correctly). once you have it working correctly, turn the firewalls back on, leaving needed ports open.

(make sure both computers are set to the same workgroup, and that you have the proper shares enabled. i like to setup shares restricting to specific IP addresses on my local network to allow for starters)

are you new to computer networking also? i can give more detailed suggestions if so.

don't forget other resources as well...perhaps a quick google or LQ search for "basic Samba setup" or some such creature will give some useful information.

good luck.

One of the easiest ways is to use Webmin. Go to www.webmin.com (I believe), download the RPM and install it using Yast. After installing reboot. Then open shell and su (it asks you for the root password). Then type:

smbpasswd -a yourlinuxusername

It asks for a password.

Then go to https://localhost:10000

Enter root + password to login. Go to servers, then Samba Windows File Sharing.
You might have to tell webmin where samba is. It's under etc/samba I believe.
Now you can easily create shares (don't forget to give write permissions). Also under Windows Networking don't forget to enter your workgroup and server name.

In windows it's easy now. If it can't see the computername use the ip address. In win explorer \\theipaddress\, you should see the shares you made. Right MB - map network drive etc.
