Hello all.

Before you grill me I read this article on The Inquirer a link from www.linux.org. I read it carefully, it made my head itch and thought that the author of the report has got to be from another planet.

I was disgusted with his report on SuSE 9.3.

I was perplexed by the man's attitude to the installation, I think is was trying SuSE 6.3 and got the numbers the wrong way round.

I've had SuSE since v7 and yes it has had its problems but I have never had the stuff he has had. I haven't got 9.3 yet, but I am sure it isn't what he is making out to be.

I understand he has downloaded the bootup disk and installing from a FTP site, but really is it that difficult?

A man who expected the computer to do it all...not the linux way, but I must admit Suse does a very good job. The problem I think he really had was trying something new, and actually attempting to learn. From what I can recall of my Suse install (dropped it because, well sorry, I don't like the way its setup) it was as easy as windows. One more thing, why would the home pc user setup a dual-boot machine if they weren't told they could or how to? That seems ridiculous that is complaining about changing the boot partition, I mean, you have to do that for windows partitions as well, if you have more than one version.

I'll add my two cents, without actually reading the article.

The vast majority of "modern" computer users have never installed any OS. Yes, windows makes the choices for you. Unfortunately they're usually the wrong choices.

I installed SUSE by ftp creating a dual boot system with win xp in the process. The trick? Download the admin guide in pdf format and read the intallation instructions. Worked just fine for me.

Not everyone should own a computer.....Just because you can, don't mean you should.

It make you wonder if these writers of computer articles actually are qualified in doing what they are writing about or just pick up ideas from other articles and mix their own flavour of ideas.

I think the man should made to do it again with a panel of Linux guru's watching what he does.

Make him sweat.

comme on people, if you can't install SuSE properly and you wrote an article like taht means you're really stupid, or SuSE is not for you!

go on, try ubuntu/kubuntu (in vogue today) - by the way, where it asks you for the root password 'cause I've missed that part ... anyway, back to our SuSE 9.3!

Hope it wasn't too hard.

Try again with an official boxed edition.The install gives you a slideshow overview of features and installation indicator.
Last time i checked,it took 39 minutes to install XP,without drivers.(You did install nvidia drivers on windows didn't you?)
Beagle will be included in the box set.Try running the menu updating tool to add it to the k-menu.
Windows and linux both need a dvd decrypter program for dvd playback.Realmedia,quicktime,and flashplayer aren't included with windows either.
As for adding programs,the novell site includes a straightforward guide to adding sources to YAST.By doing this you avoid the issue of compiling from source (which can be done on windows also) and it gets added to the menu.
As for games,I've said it before and I'll say it again:that is an issue for the game developer,try running mac software on windows.
SuSE includes a multitude of wizards.The first thing you see on screen is a customization/first-run wizard for kde.And as root,everything in the YAST menu is a wizard.

I'll concur with all of the above comments! The writer seems neither educated or able to write the article from an objective standpoint. Whomever said "not everyone should own a computer" hit the nail on the head!

This was a funny, and in some cases, I would have to agree.

I like linux no matter what the install. As long as I can get it going and get to work. I love creation such as programming and web design, however, sometimes it is fun to piss around with a distro that is complex. If you are more interested in getting down to business, distros such as SuSE are my choice, but sometimes it is fun to get in there and get dirty.

Way to go.

I don't know but somehow I got the impression that he had gotten his Windoze XP system to literally spoon-feed his sorry ar##!

The biggest problem was the dual boot. If he had installed it as the only OS on his system it would have been easy and it was problems with that set the tone. That is the jist of the email I sent him. Compare oranges to oranges. Another line from my email told him to try to load windows second and having a dual boot that way.

I thought the most significant and quotable statement from the article is "...this ignorant user."
