From what Novell has said before the name SuSE will remain on the SuSE Linux Professional line as well as the SuSE Linux Enterprise Server line, but Novell is used on Novell Linux Desktop, the stripped down corporate desktop version of SuSE 9.3 Pro. SuSE people please correct me if I am wrong here.
It looks like they may drop the "SUSE" name for the next .0 version. From what I understand, Novell is the brand they're using for their commercial Linux software anyway, so SUSE may become more like Fedora Core is to Red Hat.
that would be nice, i think SUSE is better than Fedora in some ways, but they just keep charging more and more for their pro, while they brought down the price of their enterprise Linux.
What doesnt make sence is that NLD 9 is cheaper, comes with more support, can use SUSE packeges (from what ive read) and has a longer cycle so your not throwing away money ever six months, and comes with some propriatary software, such as java, flash, and DVD reading tools. But SUSE doesnt and I'm paying Double the Price? Whats going on? It's like their doing it on purpose to get ppl to switch.
It appears that Novell is moving Suse toward a community supported Fedora Core model of operation. Recently our http://web3.foxinternet.net/fox7777/sig.htm had a Suse 9.3 demonstration at http://www.linuxnorthwest.org & we received no support or Suse materials from Novell but they had a very large amount of Novell promotional materials for the event. The recent resignation of Suse President Richard Seibt shows further signs of coming changes.
In a few months Novell Linux Desktop 10 will debut based on refinements to Suse 9.3. I think moving Suse to a community supported Fedora Core model is OK but would like to see Novell keep supporting the Suse brand & boxed sets of Suse and Novell Linux Desktop still available at stores like Fry's, Comp USA, etc. on alternating schedules. This is very important because many computer users still prefer to go to their local store & buy the complete package of software, manuals, support, etc. The Suse brand is very popular with Linux enthusiasts & Novell should keep supporting it.
I agree, one hundred percent I would rather have a boxed set with manuals and Cd's or DvD's than have to download them and create my own packege., SUSE is especially popular in Europe, that would be a lot of money gone, if they refuse to keep supporting it.
