Thumbs down Suse Linux renamed to openSuse linux

Here we go again.

Opensuse project ( READ : NOVELL ) has decised to rename the opensource edition of Suse Linux to openSUSE.

Announcement : " We'll rename SUSE Linux into openSUSE.

With current naming we experienced confusion internally and externally
between the project openSUSE and the distribution created there. And
especially with the new naming of our Linux business products (SUSE
Linux Enterprise 10) the differentiation between our business products
and community/consumer product is not intuitive. "

I among others have tried to tell people that opensuse is just the project, Suse Linux is the product, but now it seems all that work has been a waste of time.

What this really means that novell will now name its enterprise products Suse Linux and the not-so-important opensource edition will be called opensuse (as long as they name it again?) or cancel the whole project

Smile Novell Desktop

I always thought openSuse was like a kinda test platform for the latest kernel's and packages etc so that novel could put all the finalised working bits into is Novel Desktop. We got a full version of the latest Novel Desktop at work and it seemed to be an older version of kde etc. Think that there trying to get together ultimate stability for business's. Their new website for opensuse is much better than trauling around the novel site for freebies. I think it is a positive change.

Novell cannot get their collective a$$e$ together. From
Will Novell continue to sell consumer-oriented SUSE Linux in retail shops?

Yes. One of the objectives of the openSUSE project is to make SUSE Linux easily available to anyone. Although many SUSE Linux users may download the software from the project Web site or from mirrored sites around the world, other SUSE Linux users will prefer to have a physical copy of the product. Working with Novell, the openSUSE project will continue to create a fully packaged retail edition of the distribution that will be available in retail shops and online stores worldwide. The retail edition includes installable media, printed manuals and several additional commercial software programs as well as limited technical support. The availability of a retail edition with support options sets SUSE Linux apart from any other community-based Linux distribution.
