Suse Linux Move to a new server
 

hi guys, need your input. I have this 5 year old server and we're planning to replace it with a new one.

Can I just clonezilla to clone it to image and restore the image to the new server?

What's the best way to do it?

Cloning the hard disk is only recommendable if you have the same hardware on the other machine; or you are cloning to a new hard disk that you will use in the same machine.

As you say you are replacing the server I suppose it's a newer hardware, for which I would definitively do a fresh install and then restore the configuration files.

If you tell us which services are you running we can maybe give you a hand on the files you will need to copy to the new server.

It may be possible to clone the OS and work 100%. I agree that in the old days, only a complete reload was suggested. It still has advantages but if you were to convert the current install to generic terms it can be easily moved in most cases. OpenSuse and Suse may have fstab and grub entries based on specific hardware that would need to be either edited later or put to generic.

Simple maybe to test this with a virtual machine running on some free good system. Or you can try to test the image on the replacement server.
