The only divese i got to get acces to the internet from my labtop i whith a wireless connection (PCMCIA card). But the setup program can not find a network divese. My desktop do nok have a DVD-rom drive so i cannot download the DVD.iso file and install Suse 9.2 that way. How can I install Suse then? Can the instalation program (kernel) install Suse from the internet with my Wireless PCMCIA card?

I am not sure if you'll get a wireless device to work for installation. Don't you have a cable network adapter? Or couldn't you buy/borrow one? The only other option I see is to buy the boxed version with 5 CD's.

Wait! Do you have another OS installed on that laptop and some space left? Then you could download SUSE from that OS and install from your local HDD.

Pick one:

Boot from CD and select local HDD as installation source, specify the path and have fun.

Thanks a lot!!
No i dont have a cable internet divese only a wireless.
I got Win 98 before but i lost some system files and now it dosent work.
So i think i will try to install another OS (my only alternative is Win xp pro) and download suse to the harddisk.
That file(s) is it from the ftp server i have to download to the harddisk? Is it the DVD.iso file? Is it enough just to have the DVD.iso file on the harddisk?

It may work with the FTP-DVD.ISO, if you unpack it on the HDD with WinRAR, but usually you download the whole tree below the version-number (which is 15GB unfortunately). If you do the later, you may be able to omit the folders 'suse/src', 'suse/ix86_64', and 'iso' since they contain packages that are not necessary for your installation (unless you have a 64bit processor or want to compile everything from source).

I only got a 10 gb HDD can i connect to computers directly to each other and install suse, if i have the hole tree on the other computer? can the instalation find the other computer and install suse then? And can i use a USB interface or a data cable 9 pen or 32 pens to cannect the computers together?

But then you have the same problem again: How do I setup my wireless card? Or what type of connection did you think of?

Try your idea with the DVD.ISO. That's 'only' 3.4 GB.

yes but the dvd is compressed, a 3.4 gb dvd could easliy turn into something more than 10gb..

zupertj 03-10-2005 11:28 AM

Thanks a lot!!!!

I will thy that!
Thanks!

Not sure about the compression. A lot of people tried to unpack the ISO and burned the files (and found out that the DVD does not boot :) ), but it still fit on the medium.

Thanks abisko00 is the 10 gb also only if i install all the programs to suse?

Can suse 9.2 work on a ntfs file-system?

abisko00 03-10-2005 12:06 PM

Not sure what you mean. The DVD is 3.4GB and contains most of the standard packages you may need. Some are missing, but can easily be installed once you system is running.

You'll probably run into trouble if you attempt to install all available software, since you have only 10GB for everything (setup files plus installation). During installation, the amount of space you need increases due to uncompression of the rpm's (maybe that's what pattont was refering to). So you should start with a minimal system until you get your wireless card installed to download all the missing stuff (since the installation data is not necessary anymore). The more I think about it, the more complicated it sounds to me. Maybe you should think of an alternative.

I'd suggest to have a try with 9.1 Personal first, which fits on one CD!
