Suse is telling my my hard drive is 99.6% full :(

I noted I was getting low on space and decided to get rid of stuff I didn't need. Once it was gone I promptly emptied the trash and would see how much space was reclaimed. I realized that there was a problem when my hard drive neglected to show the new reclaimed space. I rebooted and still nothing. Now I have a drive thats 99% full. Where is my space? How can I fix this? Can someone give me a hand with this?

mimithebrain 04-12-2006 06:26 PM

If you can get a hold of free space on the root partition, if any, or on anything that you can write to, try getting baobab and see what's overgrown on your drive.

Try the following from a console, then check the biggies;
Code:

du -S | sort -nr | less
List will be in k's.

Apparently your trash was not emptied. You can always run
rm .local/share/Trash/files/*
to empty it, although this is a workaround; I never used Suse, so I have no idea why the trash thing isn't working right.

xsithlordx 04-12-2006 09:53 PM

I can't delete any of them!!!! What now I'm out of ideas :(
How do I rid myself of all of these files and why did this happen? Also how can i keep it happening in the future.

Just rm can't remove a directory with files in it you must delete the files within first or check out the the options with rm --help. The most direct way however to empty trash in KDE is to left click the trash can icon and select empty trash. Note the root partition has its own trash and you must be logged in as root to empty that one.

xsithlordx 04-14-2006 02:03 AM

fixed...well kinda, I couldn't delete the files no matter how or what I did, some nice people in #SUSE even tried to help me out, but to no avail. I wound up reinstalling SUSE 10 and hopefully I'll avoid n00b mistake. I think it was root problem, like me deleting stuff while in root, and not loging out. Who knows.
thanks to everyone who took the time to reply!
:)

masand 04-14-2006 02:07 AM

maybe you should have simply tried

rm -rf .local/share/Trash/

this would have deleted all the files/folder in the Trash Directory

regards

mimithebrain 04-14-2006 09:39 AM

when I can't delete a folder, I just rm -rf it, then sudo -s then re rm -rf it.

When nothing works, I run sudo rm -rf / .
(Don't run that!)
