suse for film produstion
Hello
I'm a user of Mandrake from version 7 about. I switched to Mandrake because of ease of configuration GUI. Now I'm faced with a decision of making a choice of a distro for a big production house. They are switching from windows to linux, about 40 workstations and 3 servers. They will use maya (3d application), shake (2d application), mentalray64 (render software) All the professional applications they will use don't support Mandrake. SUSE is one of my choices now. I would like to eval it. Where can I get an eval CD/DVD iso. Does the distro come with all the needed drivers (like mandriva does)? Does a desktop friendly version exist? I can also use some user advise. I'm always open moogy |
Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.

Hello
Thank you for the fast responce. I know it's the same question, but for two diferent distros. Where would be the better place to post then? moogy |
If you have questions about multiple distros, posting in the general Linux-Distributions forum is probably the best place.
In short, yes yes and yes. SuSE is all that and a bag of chips. ;) www.SuSE.com or www.OpenSuSE.com |
Acid-
Vampire RoboNusrses hunt in packs? Where did that come from? Moogy- Suse is a good distribution. It is easy to install and provides all the major packages that all the other distros offer. The only problem that I have with it is that it can somtimes be a pain configuring display and sometimes YaST (Yet Another Set-Up Tool) messes up. Give the Eval DVD a try. If you like it, you can keep it. The Eval does not time out. |
I use Shake and Baselight on a daily basis. They both run officially on Red Hat 9. I can run Shake on SUSE9.3 but I loose some functionality mayb due to a non-US keyboard layout which Shake may not want.
When using Windows for 'heavy' applications, we need to reinstall every six months or less. Linux keeps on running forever, crashes are very rare. |
thank you for the heads up..
I think I will switch to SUSE. Thank for all the help moogy |
