Suse 9 Freezing on install after RAID setup

yesterday I installed Suse Linux Enterprise Server 9 (SLES9) on an old gateway server we had lying around. (old being two or three years old)

I set it up with software raid during the install, and accepted most of the defaults (which left me with no GUI, no server software, etc. etc.) Since I'm lazy, I figured I could reinstall everything, then check the "install everything" box.

I also decided setting up hardware raid would be faster than software, so I went into the Adaptec controller's setup utility and set up a RAID-1 array.

I rebooted with the same exact SLES9 CD 1 in, and the screen popped up with the word "welcome" in different languages as usual, but instead of giving me a list of things I could do (i.e. boot from hard disk, install suse linux, set up kernel, etc.) it just froze and put bars across the screen.

I'm hoping I can use hardware raid, but I'm going to switch back to software (or possibly none at all) to check if that solves the problem.

Anyone else have this issue?

Well, I used the Adaptec utilitiy to format the drives, and it worked great!

Now, when I try to load the AIC790x module before install, it doesn't work. (it tells me loading the module failed)

When I get to the installation screen it says no hard drive found.

:(
