SUSE 9.3 x86_64 - Cant boot after install

I just installed suse 9.3 on a spare partition on my second hd /dev/sdb6 to be precise. I already have XP and fedora 4 or the other partitions like this;

/dev/sda1 NTFS (Windows C
/dev/sda2 Linux /boot (md mirrored with sda2)
/dev/sda3 Linux LVM (md mirrored with sdb3 - Fedora 4 is here)
/dev/sda4 Extended

/dev/sdb1 NTFS (Windows D
/dev/sda2 Linux /boot (md mirrored)
/dev/sda3 Linux LVM (Fedora 4 is here)
/dev/sda4 Extended
/dev/sda5 Swap
/dev/sdb6 Suse 9.3 / (reiserfs)

This is my athlon 64 machine and it has the 64 bit fedora and the 64 bit suse oses running.

I did almost the same ( partitions 5 and 6 are reversed) on my pentium 4 machine, that is in terms of partitioning etc and it all works perfectly with a grub.conf on the fedora OS like this;

# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,1)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/vg00/rootlv
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/md0
default=0
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,1)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title Fedora Core (2.6.12-1.1398_FC4smp)
root (hd0,1)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.12-1.1398_FC4smp ro root=/dev/vg00/rootlv vga=788 early-login
initrd /initrd-2.6.12-1.1398_FC4smp.img
title Fedora Core (2.6.12-1.1398_FC4)
root (hd0,1)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.12-1.1398_FC4 ro root=/dev/vg00/rootlv vga=788 early-login
initrd /initrd-2.6.12-1.1398_FC4.img
title Suse 9.3 Professional (2.6.????)
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz ro root=/dev/hda5 vga=788
initrd /boot/initrd
title XP-SP2
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

however when I try the same setup on the athlon 64 I get this when the kernel starts to load;

root(hd1,5)
Filesystem type is reiserfs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/vmlinuz ro root =/dev/sdb6
[Linux bzImage, setup=0x1600, size=0x18b617]
initrd /boot/initrd

.
Decompressing Linux ...

Invalid compressed format (err=1)

-- System Halted.

This looks like it picking the correct spot and finding the kernel etc, any ideas where I've gone wrong ?

Cheers.
