Suse 9.3 User Login Failed

Hi, I have just installed SUSE 9.3 on my computer but I was prompted with an user name which I do not have to login. During the installation of the SUSE 9.3, I was prompted to key in a password to login as a "root user" but I was never prompted to enter any user name. Is there a default name for new installations? Any way I can fix this without re-installing? Thank you.

Didn't you key in the password for root user during installation?

Yes aeolus, I keyed in the password and I know the password but I do not know the user name because I was not prompted to key in during the installation. Thank you.

Hmmmmm...when I did my install after entering a root password, there was a section for creating local user accounts. Since that doesn't seem to have happened for some reason, you should be able to log in as root and go into YAST. Click on the "Security and Users" tab and click on "Edit and Create Users". You should be able to create whatever user accounts, including passwords, you want.

Hi bmk, thanks. I could not go into YAST to do anything more because I do not have an user name. I tried to login without the user name, ie just the password but it failed me. Should I do an update on Suse 9.3 again? I hope not cause the process is taking very long. Thank you again.

Did you try "root" (no quotes, of course) as the user name and your root password? And my apologies for the delay--real life interferes at the worst times!

I should point out... "Root" isn't a default user name... It is the admin account, which you should only login to set up your own account and when installing software. Normally speaking, you should be working in a general account. Being logged in as root all the time is very unsafe.
So log in as root, and then make a new account.

RedShirt, you're absolutely right. I should have reminded LinuxAgogo to do the Create User thingie I mentioned above now that he can log on as root and use that user account as his default. Good call! Evidently, I require more of the Glorious Brown Elixer o' Life (aka coffee).

(edited for typos--oh, yeah, more coffee)
