hii all,
I have been working in suse9.3 for quite some time now without any major problems.today when i logged off and tried to login as root .I was greeted with a black screen followed by the login prompt with no reported errors .I am able to login as root in failsafe mode but not in any GUI mode.When i start kde from the shell in failsafe.Kde starts but with few error messages.I "didnot" upgraded my OS recentrly and other users are able to login in KDE without any problems.

any help would be deeply appreciated

Using the GUI as root is generally not recommended. There are better (safer) options to gain root permissions temporarily (su, sudo, kdesu). But this doesn't answer your question, I suppose.

I am not familiar with 9.3, but have a look at /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager if there is a setting that may prevent root access to KDE. I agree with muha: the error messages might be helpful. Have a look at /root/.xsession-errors and /var/log/kdm.log.

i have logged in as root user before there was no problem ,infact i have done it many times..the logged files mentioned are liitle big so i m giving a link for them
The .xsession-error file is empty

also when i started kde in failsafe mode i get following messages

Okay, I had this same problem with SuSE 9.1. Did you install Yahoo Messenger when you last logged on as root? If yes, then I have a solution for sure.

Yes, the yahoo messenger could be a problem.

Your log-files do not show any strange messages, so they do not help. The errors from console are also not very descriptive. I guess the libhal error comes from reduced hardware support in the failsafe mode. Nothing I would connect with login problems.

You could try to delete (backup!) some hidden files in /root, like .DCOP something. This usually helped with the yahoo messenger problem.

ok yes i realized i did install yahoo messenger before the breakdown... so which files should i exactly delete...

Delete a file named .xinitrc in /root. And try to login. Please let me know if it works.

me also got the same problem...

When u install yahoo messenger, don't select Yahoo messenger to run automatically when u log in to your Linux. Anyway, after deleting the .xinitrc file in ur home directory, your problem will be gone.
