SuSE 9.3 professional

Guys,
Novell is giving 5 CDs of SuSE 9.3 for download. Is this the complete OS or does it come with 30-day limit ?

thanks

Answering you question...

The five CDs are a complete and full featured OS, but is not the complete SUSE Linux Professional, which you must pay to have. This is called an "evaluation" version, but has most packages that most users will ever need (KDE, Gnome, LaTeX, OpenOffice, Firefox, Gaim, XMMS, drivers for most of popular hardware, and even Blender!).

If you need a particular package not available in the CDs (or DVD), you can always download it freely from a mirror, even for packages of the "Professional" version.

If you have a DVD burner, it is advisable to download the DVD image, as it also contains the version for 64-bit processors.

SUSE is a good OS after all, even considering that it is now part of Novell. It is a good flavour of Linux, especially for beginners. If you are not an experienced user, I recommend using it. But I also recommend that, as you learn more and more, you move to more, say, pure Linux, such as Slackware or Debian (these opinions are very personal, and I don't want to start any flame war here!).

Finnaly, remember to put your questions in the right forum next time.

Good luck!

I'd hold off on suse 9.3, considering openSuSE is testing v10 at the moment.

It's in beta, but will be out soonish.

I suggest you wait for that, if your heart is set on SuSE...

But speaking of SuSE, I could not help but find this thread posted under Slackware...
So just playing on the odd event that someone reads this thread and does not know the difference.

SuSE != Slackware

to the guys who were cheesed off cos I posted in the slackware section, sorry, but I wanted to get the opinion of real linux users (slackware). SuSE fellas would have probably belt whipped me for not paying $$$s to Novell.

thanks anyways..

Don't worry about it too much, the disadvantage to posting it in the slackware forum is that you will get very biased opinions, if you where to post it in the general forum you will get a much wider range of user responding than just slackware users which is a good thing.

As for your question, SuSE users are most likely to know your answer, I thought that novell offered the full version for download a few months after the actual release so they can get money out of the more keen user, but I'm not sure how correct I am

well i was going to give you my opinion of suse but for the words i would of used i am sure i would have been kicked off of the forums.

Why not just use slackware. I dont get it everyone says it is so hard to use. I do admit when i first started it was a little harsh but after google and a few post on here and a very good IRC chat channel i found it was preety easy.

As of 9.3 this is no longer true. They clarified users' copying rights in license.txt at the root of the CD.

Copy, download, share, give copies away, providing no money changes hands. If you take money you'd better be transferring Suse-produced media, packaging, and documentation.

I ran Slackware 9.0 and 9.1 and tried 10.0 before switching to SUSE 9.1. Slackware is a good product but I got tired of fiddling with dependencies every time I wanted to install/compile applications for a specific task. SUSE 9.1 offers fewer options but it gets me to the solution faster and more reliably. I got it free via ftp. I have since ordered 9.3 which I will be installing soon. I don't believe in rushing to get new products (SUSE 10) as I spend more time working around unresolved bugs than achieving the desired result.

Wow, that's embarrassing. The Mods must be playing a funny little game by moving this to the Suse Forum. I can't help but chuckle.

BTW, I feel I'm a real Linux user and I use SuSE at work on more servers than I care to count at this moment. It's the most professionally done and supported distro out there.
