Suse 9.3 Installation Via Windows XP FTP

Hi! I have downloaded SuSe 9.3 via bittorrent but its about 8GB, I cannot burn it to a DVD because I don't have dual layer capability. Therefore I want to set up a way to install over the network, but I don't know how to do this. Does anyone have recommendations for setting up a FTP install using Win XP. I have downloaded the Network install disk and have the image mounted on a virtual drive the only problem is how to put the image on the network so that it is bootable. Any help would be great. Thanks

I am not sure if Windows allows to network-share a virtual drive. But generally you share the drive with the installation tree as normal Windows network share and boot your future Linux box with the network-iso. Then you select 'samba' as protocol for the network source and point it to your Windows server. You can also setup a FTP server, but this requires a little more work.

In case the network share is not possible from the virtual drive, you can extract the iso with WinRAR.

EDIT: Another option for you could be a full network (FTP) installation from one of the SUSE mirrors, or the download of the 5CD set (instead of the DVD iso).

Thanks for the help, I'll probably just get the 5 CD set then.

I just recently did a FTP install and that worked like a charm ... spot on and no issues what so ever !

The only thing you need (apart from time) the FTP install iso, boot that one, press F3 when install options are shown, select FTP, enter the mirror URL you want to use (have it written down prior to boot (i didn't ;) ), and follow the steps

Really impressive,

Kman

I've got Suse 9.3 in a single DVD version (Bittorrent DL, no problems running Suse so far). I could burn a copy and mail it your way if you wanted to give me your address.

Hi! Thanks for the help, I just downloaded the 5 cd version and installed it. I wanted to set up a ftp server to serve the image on my network and do an install that way but I coudn't figure how to mount the image on the ftp so it would be seen by the linux client. Anyways thanks for all the help I appreciate it and am now currently running 9.3

I think there was some missunderstanding:

The 5 CD set is best for local installation (directly from CD). For local-network installation, it is best to download the complete structure (without /iso) from the FTP server. Or try to extract your DVD.iso as I suggested previously.

You could burn the CD's and share the CD drive as Windows share. But then you have to switch CD's...
