I experience great troubles trying to run SuSE 9.3 64 bit
on HP workstation xw9300.
The installation completed smoothly, but the kernel hangs at the first
boot after the installation on the following steps:
default mode: immediately, giving just a black screen with two small color lines
safe mode: PCI: Probing PCI hardware (bus 00)
XEN mode: NET: Registered protocol family 16
Reinstallation does not help.
The question is how I can force Linux to run?
I have rummaged through the Web and found several similar cases,
but no adequate solution was proposed. If the problem lays in a
incompatibility between HP xw9300 and Linux SuSE,
does it mean it is a lost case? I had to run SuSE 9.0-9.3 due to the
requirement of a specific software I need.
The system specification follows.
Thank in advance for the help.

Not yet. The problem is I _have_ to use 9.3 - 9.0 SuSE, this is the requirement of a software I am planning to run. I have never suspected I will have hardware problems with Linux and I am highly disappointed...
Thank you, I will try.
By the way, what defines the OS version? Can I use SuSU 9.3 with a kernel from another OS version and possibly some packages from yet another version? I am new in the Linux field and this question confuses me...

Complete distribution: kernel, X-server, ...

As I know, 9.3 uses kernel 2.6.X, so it is possible to upgrade the kernel. Other packages: maybe, often this causes broken dependencies.

If you have used another unix-like OS, there is no big difference.

It seems I have narrowed the problem slightly. After installing/booting the system with different options I have found that if I either install or boot without acpi=off options, the kernel simply crashes with a message
"<0> Kernel panic - not syncing. Attempting to kill init!"
after a page of illegible numbers.
On the other hand, if I include acpi=off either at installation or as a boot options, then kernel cannot find the PCI hardware:
"ACPI: Subsystem revision 20050211
ACPI: Interpreter disabled
PCI: Probing PCI hardware
PCI: Probing PCI hardware (bus 00)"
I am equally not satisfied with any of these results...
To close the theme. I have downloaded SuSE OSS 10.0 from www.opensuse.org, installed it - it did work.
Without graphic, however, sax2 freezed. I have run #sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-7676-pkg2.run; #sax2 -m 0=nvidia; set 800x600 with 8 colours (!), generic VESA(I have SyncMaster 730b that is not on the list), then increased it gradually to more acceptable values.
Still my network connection switches on and off as it wishes...
The bottom line is I will not install Linux on my home machine - it just does not worth the troubles.
