Suse 9.3 and D-Link Won't Talk?

Hello...I'm still not having any luck getting a wireless (Laptop) connection between Suse 9.3 and my D-Link Wireless router. It see's and show's a connection to my SSID...shows a strength signal, but can't open up a website. The router firmware see's it as well in DHCP , but still nothing???

There must be an easier way? Does anyone have any suggestions or the proper configuration. Thanks Mike

What is going on with it? Need some more details to help point the way.

Are you using WEP on the Access Point? 64 or 128bit? If no... or if yes and that much is working:
Do you have a valid ip address? If yes:
Can you go to an IP address? is it no connection, or no DNS? Try going to 64.233.167.104(google).

Let me know.

Hi...Well in the router config (desktop), its set to wpa/psk and the cipher type is tkip

Now in the config for the wireless card on my laptop the authentication mode is set to wpa/psk ...key imput type=passphrase

when It shows my SSID and a couple of others...I pick mine...connect and then it asks me for a "WEP" passphrase..."WPA" is not a choice now...I'm thinking this might be the problem, or part of it.

One more thing....both "kwifimanager" and "KInternet" are in the bottom right tray...which one should I be using? Thanks...hope this helps

Bingo, WPA is different from WEP. If your router is using WEP(probably 64bit) You need to be using 64bit WEP on the card too. Then use the password, and I bet it pops right away.

As for KInternet and Kwifi... neither, try to do it all in YAST, from the Control Center first. Then if it doesn't pick it up completely, or you need multiple profiles, use kwifimanager.

Thanks...I'll give it a try....I was told that "WEP" is not as secure as "WPA" is this true?

Also, in my wireless card config when it asks for my ip address..does it want the router ip...192.xxx.xxx.xxx Thanks again

Well...My router says it connected...the green bars in the sys tray show a strength, but when I bring up kwifimanager it says connected to network....acess point 00:00:00:00:00:00
and it says "local IP" unavailable......the signal strength keeps moving up and down, but as soon as I try a web browser it gives me nothing???

It seems you are cross configing then.
You should at least be able to go to the router's Ip address if you are connected. Probably "192.168.0.1".

WPA is a different kind fo security than WEP, and it isn't really useful to get into the benefits and drawbacks if your router does WEP and not WPA. It means you are using WEP either way.
Both need to be set at 64bit, then you need to check for various things if youa re still not connecting. If you can get to the IP addy of the router and not past it, let me know. Otherwise you probably just need to fiddle with settings, you may not be recieving some of the needed info from DHCP.

Let me know what all the settings you are trying to go with are. Otherwise you will need to start posting some dmesg and ifconfig and other info to see what is going on, and what isn't.

I'll fiddle with it...My router has both WEP and WPA and about 3 others, and the wirless card config has "WPA and No WEP" at the begining and At the connect point it has "WEP" and No WPA"...?? I found a site that this guy wrote on how he did it (with pictures of the config pages) but of course he's using his configuration info, but its helpfull...check it out...

http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/15834.html

I should mention that the laptop is a dual boot (XP and Suse 9.3) and when I access my router config, I'm going to my Desktop system...I don't think that matters, but thought I'd mention it. By changing the router to WEP then its going to use that for all...Right?? and I'd feel better using WPA

I even called D-Link support, but they give no support for Linux, even though it a choice when you tell them about your system....Tomorrow is another day...thanks again...I imagine I'll be in touch tomorow...Mike

Well this is the best I've done so far...Tells me I'm online...the wireless LED lights up on my laptop...But the problem is that the network that it connects to is NOT mine....and my router doesn't see anything??? and of course when I try to get online using FireFox...Nothing as well....I'll keep trying now...I'm obsessed!!! I'm wondering if a 10lb sledge would help?? lol bye for now
