SuSE 9.2: suspend/resume issues with Thinkpad r50p
 

I recently installed 9.2 on my Thinpad r50p with the hope that I could use the suspend/resume feature out of the box. Unfortunately it has not been the case. This first part (suspend) works very well, either to RAM or to disk, however in both cases, the laptop does not resume properly. The screen remains off while the disk shows activity. So far the only way out of this situation is to restart the computer by poping out the battery :-(

I have two questions, has someone successfully used this feature on this model? Can someone provide me with some pointers to better identify the cause? I have been suspecting that maybe some modules don't get unloaded/reloaded properly, but I am lacking the expertise to confirm it.

The typical way to get out of hibernation mode with Thinkpads is to press the Power button for 4 to 5 seconds. This IBM article hopefully will be of interest -- J.W.

Unfortunately, your tip does not work, pressing the powerbutton for a few seconds actually turns off the laptop ...

Well it's actually IBM's tip, not mine. Sorry it didn't work. When my T40 goes into hibernate mode, pressing the power button briefly will bring it back. -- J.W.

Did you have to do anything to get you configuration to support suspend?

Have you tried running Yast to update? I am a newbie so forgive me if I am ignorant.

I just finished a new installation under VMWARE. I posted a question to this group about whether or not to update my kernel. Under YAST I can see a kernel update option. When I read the fixes covered on my screen, some related to suspend/hibernate problems and IBM laptops were mention for some other fixes as well. Maybe this will help you.

okay... I increased the trace level for ACPI... It seems that the resume is completing successfully and the connection restored. Only the screen remains off... could there be one module that I need to reload?

It appears that I only needed to pass the following to the kernel: acpi_sleep=s3_bios. Suspend/resume to RAM seems to work like a charm.
