suse 9.2 not working with compaq machine

Hello. I am trying to install suse 9.2 on an older compaq machine, but when I get into the installation screen I see it all distorted, as if my monitor was set at an incorrect resolution.
It's not my monitor, I have suse running with this monitor on another machine, so i think it may be the compaq video card.
According to windows xp it is an intel 82815 graphics controller, and it is integrated into the motherboard, it is not an agp card. How can I get around this problem?

Try setting the resolution to 640x480 or running the install in text mode when you get the first screen.

Which graphics driver do you use? Did you already configure graphics with sax2?
Usually the vesafb driver works for most cards. Otherwise try i810.

All I did so far was put in the suse dvd, it loaded a bunch of stuff and the first screen it got to, it was all messy. THe only option I can choose at this point is boot from hard disk, install, install no acpi, and install safe mode, I tried using install safe mode and no acpi but still it does the same thing.

Then try to install in text mode. This you'll get either in 'Manual Installation', or it is an option on the boot-screen, I am not sure. You can setup the graphics later. You may also select a lower resolution on the first boot-screen.

Thanks for the tip. How do I select a lower resolution on the first boot screen?

There should be a couple of options on the F keys. I don't remember which one, just try them ;)

Hello. I have tried doing the manual install. I even made the settings from color to monochrome, when I select install system it loads a bunch of stuff again and then goes to the same screen that i is all blurry and I can't see in. what can I do to get around this problem? Is suse just not compatible on this machine?

I tried pressing all the f keys also, but they do nothing. shrug

You could try to specify the graphics driver on boot screen. Before you select the installation option, type video=vesafb or video=i810. That the F-keys do not work is strange, but I must admit, that I haven't done the 9.2 installation more than once, so I don't remember changes.
