suse 9.2 install software online / FC2 yum equivalence

Hello all,

I moved from FC2 to SUSE 9.2

A very big advantage I found in FC2 is that with "yum" I was able to install any packet I wanted without worrying about dependencies, "yum" solved them all and installed all necessary packages.

SUSE 9.2 has "yast", however, I am not able to do any "online-new" installation of any packet which is not on the distribution CD/DVD, and yast only allowes me to do "online-updates" of already installed packets.

Does anybody know whether there is a "yum" equivalent in SUSE 9.2 and how to use it?

For instance I wanted to install gtk-devel, which I had to to manually, and for that I needed xfree-devel, which I had to find and install mnually, and for that I needed other packages and so on... I guess SUSE might have a way to install all necessary packages automatically.

This is Yast! It works also online. All you need to do is to add a server to the installation sources (Change Source of Installation). Have a look in the sticky thread about installation sources in this forum.

You can also run apt and yum on SuSE, but I know nothing about this.

I run apt on Suse. More details here. I understand you can also use YUM, but I've not gone that route with Suse. RedCarpet is another option with Suse, as well.

Hello All,

Yes! it is possible to install packages online with yast, as abisko00 said just by adding new installation sources.
You only need the server (from you get them) and the directory.
The server directory has to the one including the files: "content" and "directory.yast"
