SUSE 9.2 ATI Radeon 9600 need to enable 3D acceleration
 

I've downloaded the SuSE ati drivers (8.10.19)
Followed the instructions carefully.
It is running KDE with the driver and the ATI configuration utillity.
I ran fglrxconfig and entered the settings for the monitor on my laptop manually.
I still don't seem to have 3D acceleration available.
running glxgears locks up the system.

Does anyone know of an authoritative howto?
Should I use ATI's driver instead?

I'm by no means an expert in this field, but I downloaded the same drivers and only THEN I have found out that they were made for kernel 2.4 (the ver. 2.6 is still in the testing phase).
Normally, they didn't work and I had some hard time uninstalling them, because they messed up the Xorg.

I swear this question has been answered ad infinity. Use the ATI drivers, be sure not to mess up the glxconf or xserver wotn start!

I've looked at many, many posts so far. I ended up going to Mandrake 10.2 beta 3, that has a working fglrx driver with 3d acceleration as part of the install. For what it is worth. I didn't have any problems with X starting. Everything worked great accept if you wanted to run something 3D. 3Ddiag would post the message: no 3D capable chipset found, or something like that. Part of the problem seems to be that everyone has seen so many of the ATI related posts that no one wants to touch them. I will never buy another ATI product.

Don't be so angry... ATI just started to support Linux, everything is still new.
I've heard many complaints abour Nvidia too. Nothing is perfect. :(

Are you guys sure, the driver is made for 2.4 Kernel? I mean Suse 9.2 comes with 2.6 Kernel as far as I know...and this drivers

should be for Suse 9.2 (2.6 Kernel).

Uh, maybe... I have downloaded the drivers from ATI site, and readme said just that?!

It doesn't make sense how shall ATI know if the driver, which is Suse providing is 2.4 Kernel?

I just installed the Suse drivers succesfully. Finally 3D. Yeahhh ( Ihave a Dell Inspirion 8600 Laptop with a Ati Radeon 9600)
Go to the link I gave you and follow the instructions.
Its the best you start Suse with 'init 3' command, so it doesn't load the GUI. Otherwise it brakes. (check out my other thread)

And before you are doing this:
rpm -Uhv km_fglrx*.rpm

you have to go there where you had downloaded "km_fglrx-8.10.19-1.1.i586.rpm" before. The readme forgets that you are at that point in the "/usr/src/linux" directiory. Thats all.

I have to go now to a party. I'll check this thread later.

I am still wondering how smooth the installation went. I tried to do that last week 3 times and every time I broke the whole config and had to reinstall. After switching to tons of other distributions, I switched back today to Suse to give it one more shot. And it works. Kind of weird though. ;o)

Do not forget to be logt in as root. If you get any error messages (not warnings) after any command something went wrong. Stop going further. Check if you have mistyped something or if are really a root.

Well, everything went great, except the last thing: when Sax2 tried to install the drivers, as soon as it switched to these drivers, monitor lost the signal. :(
I decided not to do anything and wait for the SuSE 9.3.

hehe dude I live now in London. The bars close at 11:00 PM. Its very sad, we have to start early and go early to bed. It was more type of a bar hopping though not a party in that sense. ;o)

So you did right. The part with
#rcxdm stop

stops your KDE and kicks you back to login. You can't work from here with the KDE anymore or you crash your system. (its a bad readme I know)

Restart your system, while it is asking you to boot from Suse or WindowwsXP, you will see at the bottom a box. Type 'init 3' without quotes. Then let choose Suse.
Now you will be without GUI. login as root. Now do:
#rcxdm stop
# sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx -b /usr/X11R6/lib/sax/profile/firegl -i

sax starts and makes some tests. Go on change and choose your resolution (1920*1440 in my case), accept it. It saves and you go back to command mode.
STart KDE with init 5 or restart.

After restart if you go back to Yast Video card, you will still see no 3D acceleration, but this is just optical bullshit. Run glgears and see the 3000 fps. ;o) or this Gl-117 game which comes with Suse 9.2.

Your almost there, don't give up. ;o) And do not trust the promises of Suse. Everytime they promise something is going to be better in the next version, sure. ;o)

This causes the problem. As soon as Sax initializes.... monitor is off (a flashing message "lost sync" appears). Uh... :(

Sometimes I feel the same way. When I have enough of seeing people and just need some time being for myself. ;o)

Hmm I see. It is because the monitor is not recognized. You need to be in init 3 mode and start
# fglrxconfig

Since this one gives you more control over your video card like AA etc. Actually I used it too to see how it is, right now I am stuck to 640*480.
Damn it. The resolution of my LCD monitor wasn't right. You have to be careful. Type the max vertical and horizol on a sheet of paper before. I messed it up right now for myself.
