SUSE 9.2 and installation
 

Well I was able to download the iso from a mirror site and so I burned it to a DVD (since it was rougly 3.2 gigs). I used Nero 6 (oem version) to do the burning as an ISO image (I think!), but here is the problem....

I put the CD in, change the boot sequence so that the CD boots first. Yast comes up and I am asked for my language. I choose to do a clean install (I have 9.1 on the drive already, but I thought that since this is 9.2 I should do a clean install), it configures my system and I am given the oppertunity to fix any issues.

Under the software heading, there is red lettering that says "can't read packages - problem with writing" - or something to that effect and I can't move forward!!!!

I don't understand, should this be an upgrade? Or a clean install.....this is the second time that I have done this to no avail!!!

I guess that I would download the MD5SUMS file,
and then run
md5sum --check MD5SUMS
(in the same directory as the iso file). Perhaps the iso
download was corrupted.

Upgrade?
 

I had no issues with the ISO from Novell, but then again I ran the upgrade path from 9.0 to 9.2. It removed a few packages not on the ISO as part of the install (xemacs for example).

Is there any reason you did the clean install rather than system upgrade? It keeps pretty much everything intact that way saving in re-installation and re-configuration time.

Well.....I am new at this and was unaware that there was a way to upgrade using an upgrade path. I had thought that a clean install was the way to go about it. I figured that there were other ways, but due to my inexperience thought this the best way. Could I ask how you go about doing using the upgrade path?

Put the ISO in the drive, let it boot up and then look for the System Upgrade option it should take it from there.

Just make sure you don't do what I did and have spare unwanted kernels lying around in /boot otherwise it may link to the wrong one (never seen a 'kernel panic' message until then!).

Alright then, thanks for the help, I will most certainly try it out as I am interested to see just how different 9.2 is to 9.1!
