APM is the precursor of ACPI. Has to do with powermanagment. Don't know why this interferes with graphics...

To the last question: Yes, sax2 is the way of choice. Sax is also part of the Yast modules to change graphic related settings. You may also check the settings directly in /etc/X11/XF86config.

Yes it is strange! I tried Mandrake 10 last night and had a similar problem. I thought I would try Suse instead. I got it figured out quicker (with help from you guys). Thanks for your help!

I know for a fact that there is not stupid questions. Grub installed with Suse.
