suse 9.1 questions (extremely naive)

Hi,

My friend installed me SUse 9.1 professonal (minimal installation)
and configured it to run internet. Im largly clueless regarding how to use it..
iam a TOTAL newbie.

Here are my very naive questions:

how to install new programs using yast?

i downloaded and installed fluxbox(using rpm-uhiv "") but its not working
(it says x window cant start).how to run it?

how to run the equivalent of "windows explorer " in suse? does fluxbox
have something like it?

how to view the contents of windows partion from linux and vice versa?

how to shut down suse( i apologize for this highly stupid question..
my monitor is dying and it wont work at resolutions higher than 640*480.
probably part of the desktop is hiding)?

how to run php, apache and mysql?

i still have aproximately 1.5 gb of space in the linux partion .
please suggest good proggies for this old machine ( pIII 450 mhz and
128 MB ram).

thanks in advance

open YaST2, click "Install and remove software"
then in the box that pop out, click "Filter" and choose "search" for ur software.

shutdown, use "Ctrl-Alt-Del" or open terminal, as root, type "halt"

the windows partition is found in /windows/C but u cant see suse partition from windows.

Your questions cover a multitude of areas in all uses of Linux. I'd serious suggest either reading articles on this site or at the http://www.tldp.org (The Linux Documentation Project). Better still, for a complete beginner, getting your hands on the SuSE manual or equivalent book would be useful.
Just had a quick trawl on the net and their is a SuSE admin manual over at http://www-uxsup.csx.cam.ac.uk/suse/adminguide/

I take it you are using fluxbox instead of, say, KDE because of your machine? If you were using KDE (a bit more than the minimal install), your life would be so much easier already. File manager etc. (and way more) comes for free. Being a windows user, you wouldn't fell that out of place.

hey u
for stopping
# shutdown now
and thats all
the other way , is (the safe one), from the green round button, click and chose logout, ............

windows files system
as a root
mount -t ntfs /dev/... <nount point> .......
for fat32 is vfat
checkout for mount command
[man mount]

samba makes the connection0n between windows and linux, as linux sees them all (all file systems) but windowz no.

and so u go on
linux is not a piece of cake

byeeee

minimal installation does not include server components (Apache and mySQL, etc.)

During installation, choose either KDE Desktop Environment or GNOME system.
You will have Windows-like environment with browser, mail client or even games such as Mines.

good luck!

thank you very much for all your help
my friend installed me a minimal version(since iam a total newbie i insisted on a lite and total linux).
how do i do a more than minimal install using yast(i want kde with filebrowser,Apache ,php and mySQL, etc).

can fluxbox run KDE apps?

i installed fluxbox(because i want speed). but its not working since the other desktop is already running. what do i do?

i installed xmms using yast from network but its not working.you are supposed to type xmms in the console and it runs?

why does a minimal installation take more than 1 and half minute to boot? some thing went wrong?
