I have SuSE 9.1 pro but I'm sure that the desktop features are the same.
Anyway, right click on the desktop, then click on desktop properties.
The window that opens up will have several things to choose from. What you need will be in either Behaviors or Appearance. Basically there will be a font section where you can select everything from type, size, style, and color. Also, there is check box to allow background text color or not. Make sure that there isn't a check in that box and the annoying white background should dissapear.
I hope this works! I'm typing this from memory while sitting at a windows system at work. I'm not a pro at this so good luck!

The icon text, which is like this by default, is black with a white outline. This looks horrible and sometimes unreadable, especially with dark wallpaper. Does anyone know how to get rid of this? I can't find it in Yast or Control Center. Thanks.
