SuSE 9.1 personal D-Link 650+ WLAN
 

Hey all.
I am having a bit of a problem getting this device to work properly -.-
First of all, we made the device function, and the router(Linksys) apparently recognized the device. But we could not get an IP from DHCP.
And we are also getting a few error messages while booting, that reports the network failed to initialize.
Does anyone have any experiences with this?
With D-Link 650+ and the linksys router? One problem is that there are so many things within the router I know nothing about.

I had the same identical problem with both the Linksys router (BEF-W11S4 ver. 3) and my D-Link 650+ wireless card. I downloaded third party (Linuxant) drivers and they still didn't work. I knew that this wireless card works with Linux because my friend at work uses it without any problem.

He got his to work by doing a clean install of SuSE with the card in place, so that the distro would recognize it off the bat. I did the same thing when I got SuSE 9.2 Pro and it worked. The only cnfiguring I did after the clean install was put in my default Gateway (192.168.1.1) and made sure that I had checked the "wireless" checkbox in the hardware specs). I also put in my SSID (default is "Linksys").

Rebooted and to my amazement, it worked!

The commercial drivers were Linuxant. Here is the link:

It costs about $20 for the driver. I could not get it to work right, although I have read many positive comments about how great it works on this and other websites....

Thanks for all the good advice barneyt, but I can't seem to find where I check the box "wireless", would you happen to know where in YaST that is?
I feel so out of place in SUSE, but she didn't want Slackware :p

I'm not at my desk, so hopefully you can work with what I am telling you....

Go to YAST, Network, Network Devices, and look for the the icon for network hardware (or something like that). When you click it, you'll see the list of network cards and other hardware related to your network configuration. Highlight your card and choose"edit". A window will open up with your card, IP settings and all. Make sure that you have checked the "DHCP is automatically detected" box is checked. At the bottom of the window is three buttons that include "hardware configuration" , "advanced", and something else. Click each setting and you'l see in one a small checkbox to denote your card is a wireless notebook type card. That changes the type of card in the hardware description........ then make sure the Gateway IP and the ESSID name are in. I didn't have to do anything else.
