Suse 9.1 and my modem (and video card)
 

I just installed Suse 9.1 (my first Linux install), and most things went fine, but Yast and Suse can not detect my modem. (And, I have no 3D support, but I can't really work on that until I have the modem.) I posted a similar thread on the newbie board, because I'm not sure where is the best place to post.

I have a

Motherboard: MSI K8T NEO-FIS2R K8T80
Chip: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 512K
Modem: Creative Modem Blaster 56K V.92 PCI Modem
Video Card: ATI (Sapphire) Radeon 9550 256MB DDR 8X-A

Well I'm not sure whether you've already gotten your answer on the Newbie forum, but here goes.

Your modem is probably a winmodem, which means you will need extra drivers to get it to work with Linux. www.linuxant.com has some, and that's where I got mine.

Download the ATI drivers from Suse's FTP server here: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/sup.../suse91/fglrx/
Follow the readme directions to the letter and you should be fine. These drivers are specifically built for Suse, so they are far easier to install than ATI's drivers (at least in my experience).

I don't believe the modem is a winmodem. However, I think I got it figured out, it was just a matter of logging in under windows and finding out windows calls its port COM3, so I made the appropriate selction in Yast2. Now I just need time to add an internet account, and to try and use it.

I can't decipher the ftp address you gave for drivers. Searching the web site reveals very little; certainly not a driver fit for your card. What is the path after "supplementary"? I am trying to find the equivalent for x86_64.

I did find a 9_1 patch and I am downloading it here at work. When I get a chance this weekend, I will check and see if the version I bought is older or newer than the patch.

Ok, I lied. I can't get my modem going. I thought I had it, but no. Nowhere do I see any sign that it is a winmodem, but I can't find any Linux support. I may have to give up until I can afford more equipment, like an external modem.

I don't think they offer 64 bit drivers, I think you just have to use the 32 bit ones, but I'm not positive on that.

As for your modem, most winmodems are labeled as such. You should look up the brand and serial number if you can find it on the web and see what you can come up with. But www.linuxant.com is a big help with that.

SuSE has a great Hardware Database on their site. Get the number off your modem and look it up there. IIRC, Creative Labs only has one commonly available modem that will work, so chances are you have a winmodem. I have had NO luck installing drivers for winmodems or printers, so if you have the same experience, you will need to get a new one.

Thanks guys. It looks like I am out of luck. I went to the linuxant site, and used one of their scripts to check. Winmodem. Worse, their drivers require Intel and MMX. :cry: Is it possible that a 32 bit driver will work on my machine?

I'll double check that suse site, but I'm not holding out much hope.
