SuSE 9.1 and KDE 3.5, can they work together?

Hello, I'm new to Linux and I'm still learning some stuff.

I've recently installed SuSE 9.1 on one of my PC's. I followed the directions in a few of the stickies on how to update using the YaST repositories and I can update the system with no issues and YOU works fine. However, after I update KDE from 3.2 to the current version (3.5), I cannot seem to use my soundcard.

If I open up XMMS it tells me that I need to check my sound card avalibility. I look in YaST under my hardware section and find that my soundcard is fine and it even works. But still, no sound from XMMS or other programs.

Is there a problem that KDE 3.5 has with SuSE 9.1?

Is there an easy way to backup or archive my system before I try to update anything else so I won't need to reinstall (it's easier to do this at this point since I'm still noobish to Linux) SuSE.

Thanks in advance for any help.

They certainly can!
xmms works on my machine SuSE 9.1 KDE 3.5.0
I listen to a CD with xmms while writing this message.
Try that in a console type:
rpm -qa|grep xmms
for me it gives:
xmms-kde-3.1-54
xmms-lib-1.2.10-84
xmms-lib-mad-1.2.10-84
xmms-1.2.10-84

Unfortunately, I already re-installed SuSE 9.1. At this point in my Linux career, it was easier to re-install than to attempt to fix it. I'd like to update, but I want to be able to archive what i have now so if anothre issue comes up, i can just take a step back.
