SBC told me to buy Windows
This year I subscribed to SBC DSL and was confronted with Bill Gates brainwash. I managed to subscribe part way by following MAC instructions. SBC's user account maintenance site refused to let me in because I wasn't running IE. I tried Mozilla and Opera to no avail. I asked for a refund and got it. You might try CrossOver Office, it will run IE. Comcast cable was just as bad but CrossOver Office saved the day. Once registered there is no problem. After all most web servers run Apache on Linux. SBC and Comcast are too stupid to understand that. Another option might be to borrow a Windows laptop to register with.

SBC DSL uses PPPoE
You may already know this but most DSL, including SBC, is PPPoE. I remember using YaST to set PPPoE but not much else. I know that's not much information but its all that I remember. Other than registration on the web, Comcast was selected by setting LAN access. The later addition of a WiFi wireless router between the cable modem and my PC required no additional configuration.

Another thing
Not getting connected might relate to DNS. There are times when DHCP won't provide DNS addresses even though it has assigned your IP. You could try manually entering DNS addresses to see if that does the trick. Also I seem to remember having to set a proxy address to register over the web but that proxy address had to be removed for normal access.

Need more info
I need some more info to try and help. What do you see when you connect? What do you see when you try to surf? What is your proxy set to? What DNS addresses did you use? Anything else you might think would be helpfull.

I'm using cable so I don't use PPPoE but for your reference here are my smpppd configuration files. Perhaps man as called out in the files will give you further aid. At this stage I have no answers.
fragos@linux:/etc> cat smpppd-c.conf
# see "man smpppd-c.conf" for more information
sites = local gateway
fragos@linux:/etc> cat smpppd.conf
cat: smpppd.conf: Permission denied
fragos@linux:/etc> su
Password:
linux:/etc # cat smpppd.conf
# see "man smpppd" and "man smpppd.conf" for more information
stop-on-disconnect = notdemand
open-inet-socket = no
number-of-loglines = 250
