suse 10 locks up

SUSE 10
Dell inspiron 5160 3ghz HT
512mb ram

Installed SUSE 10 on the above system.
Every now and then ( as in within every hour ), it just locks up. screen, mouse, keys - just everything. All I can do is reboot it.

everything seems to point to an over heating issue.
fans are running normally, and kicks in high when doing high CPU tasks.
however - i can run slackware and knoppix fine all day long on the same system without any issues.

Does anyone know of any issues with SUSE that causes this to happen?

cheers
hb
