MBR install on the first disk is the correct approach. However, I have often had problems with GRUB. If the option is available, you should simply try to install LILO instead of GRUB, that will most likely do the trick.

Personally I've always preferred GRUB to LILO.

Honestly it sounds like the config file isn't set up right and it can't find your partitions or config file.

Post your grub config file and maybe we can spot the problem for you.

If you're a newbie, then take note;

Before you install your first linux distro, unless doing it on a clean drive, where you cannot erase anything BACK-UP all work. If you are unable to get into windows, find your back up disk and restore your system.

Then back-up, then try again, but this time erase windows clean off and start again. This will mean you can format the complete drive, including the MBR, and start afresh.

I have found that this makes things a lot less scary if things go wrong.

How did you install Linux? Had you created empty partition or used SuSE partitioner as "Suggested"? If as "suggested" then it's probably bad for you. To install Linux you need empty unformated partition with at least 5GB of space to have smth good on it. And YES, indeed, You should have created backup of your data
